Avodah Zarah 31

1)

(a) Rebbi Asi ... in the name of Rebbi Yehudah ben Beseira lists three categories of forbidden wine. Besides forbidding Yayin Nesech be'Hana'ah, he also attributes to it the stringent Tum'ah of a K'zayis.
What does he mean by that?

(b) What is the reason for it?

(c) In what way does S'tam Yeinam (which Chazal decreed on account of Yayin Nesech) differ from Yayin Nesech?

(d) What is the third category of forbidden wine? In what way does it differ from S'tam Yeinam?

2)
(a) What does the Mishnah in D'mai say about someone who deposits his fruit with a Nochri regarding Shevi'is and Ma'asros?

(b) Then why does Rebbi Asi not also suspect that the deposit that he receives from the Nochri really belongs to the Nochri, who switched the Yisrael's fruit for his own?

(c) What problem do we have with this answer? What ought to have been the Halachah regarding the third category, if it speaks in such a case?

3)
(a) This Kashya is based on an episode with Rebbi Yochanan, who arrived in P'rod.
What did he ask when he arrived?

(b) Rebbi Tanchum from P'rod quoted him a Beraisa cited by bar Kapara. What does the Beraisa say about someone who deposits wine by a Nochri?

(c) When Rebbi Yochanan responded with the Pasuk in Koheles "Makom she'Yipol ha'Eitz, Sham Yehei", why can he not have meant it literally?

(d) Then what did he mean?

4)
(a) To solve the current problem, Rebbi Zeira cites a Beraisa, where Rebbi Eliezer permits someone who purchases or rents a room in the Chatzer of a Nochri, which he fills with casks of wine (assuming that he has the key or the seal), to drink the wine.
What do the Chachamim say?

(b) Like whom do Rav Asi ... in the name of Rebbi Yehudah ben Beseira and the Beraisa of bar Kapara respectively hold?

(c) Like which Tana does Rav Chisda rule?

5)
(a) According to Rebbi Elazar, what is the only thing that requires two seals when deposited by a Nochri?

(b) What does Rebbi Yochanan say?

(c) Initially, we suggest that they do not actually argue, because each one goes according to a different Tana.
Like which Tana does each one hold?

6)
(a) In the second Lashon, Rebbi Elazar permits everything when there is a seal within a seal, except for wine.
What does Rebbi Yochanan say?

(b) According to which Tana are they arguing?

(c) What is then the basis of their argument?

7)
(a) Rava describes a seal within a seal. What according to him, would one need to do (to constitute a seal within a seal), if one were to overturn ...
  1. ... a large bowl over a cask of wine?
  2. ... a basket over a cask of wine?
(b) And what would one need to do if one placed a knotted skin flask of wine inside a leather sack?

(c) How could one achieve a seal within a seal even without the sack?

8)
(a) Who were the residents of the towns Ein Kushi and Bark'sa?

(b) Initially, the Chachamim forbade the wine that came from there.
Why was that? Was it because the Kutim's wine was considered Yayin Nesech?

(c) What ruling did they ultimately issue with regard to that wine?

(d) What caused the Chachamim to change their minds? What did they think initially, and what did they later realize?

9)

(a) What does the Beraisa say about someone who sends a cask of wine with a Kuti or of fish-juice or of fish-hash with a Nochri?

(b) What are we afraid of in the case of the cask of ...

  1. ... wine?
  2. ... the fish-juice?
  3. ... the fish-hash?
(c) Why are we not afraid of sending the latter two with a Kuti?

(d) What problem do we now have concerning the closed casks of Kutim?

10)
(a) On what grounds does Rebbi Yirmiyah reject Rebbi Zeira's explanation, permitting the casks of Kutim in town, whilst establishing the current Beraisa specifically whilst the Kuti is traveling?

(b) Rebbi Yirmiyah therefore establishes the case of 'S'tumos Mutaros' by 'Bein ha'Gitos'.
How does that answer the Kashya? What makes a Kuti more careful there?

11)
(a) According to Rami bar Chama Amar Rebbi Yitzchak, the Chachamim forbade Nochri beer (see Tosfos DH 'Mipnei Mah') because of Chasnus.
What does this mean?

(b) What does Rav Nachman say?

(c) Why can he not be referring to the beer in the cask ...

  1. ... in which it is made?
  2. ... into which it is poured?
(d) Then what does he mean?
12)
(a) Why do we then think that beer that matured ought to be permitted?

(b) What do we answer? Why is it nevertheless forbidden?

(c) Rav Papa would take the beer outside the store and drink it there.
What did Rav Achai used to do?

(d) On what common factor did they base their respective leniencies? What reason do they give for the basic Isur?

(e) In which point do Rav Papa and Rav Achai argue?

13)
(a) When Rav Shmuel bar Bisna arrived in Margu'an, why did he refuse to drink, when they offered him ...
  1. ... wine?
  2. ... beer?
(b) Rav permitted Nochri beer, though Chiya his son, he said, declined to drink it.
What problem do we have with that?

(c) What do we conclude? Why did Chiya bar Rav not drink Nochri beer? (d) Then why did everyone else drink it with impunity?

14)
(a) According to Shmuel, all rodents contain poison. What distinction does he make between the poison of other rodents and that of a snake?

(b) Whom did Shmuel address as 'bar Arya' (son of a lion)?

(c) What did he quote the latter's father as having said with regard to 'those fat Nochrim'? What did they used to do and survive?

(d) Why does Rav Yosef forbid the vinegar made from beer of Nochrim?

(e) On what grounds does Rav Ashi permit the same product, if it comes from the storehouse?
