Beitzah 40

BEITZAH 36-40 (Siyum!) - Ari Kornfeld has generously sponsored the Dafyomi publications for these Dafim, for the benefit of Klal Yisrael.

1) [line 22] YICHED LO KEREN ZAVIS - the owner of the house designated a small part (lit. a corner) of his house for the owner of the produce (so that the produce remains in the "domain" of its owner)

2) [line 26] IVRA D'DASHA - the bolt of the door
3) [line 35] LO MASCHAS DA'ATECH - you did not remove your attention from it (Meat that was not constantly watched from the time that the animal was slaughtered is called Basar she'Nisalem Min ha'Ayin. There are those who maintain that we suspect that the meat was somehow exchanged with the meat of a Nevelah.)

4) [line 36] MIDBARIYOS - pasture animals
5) [line 37] BAYASOS - domestic animals
6) [line 38] AFAR - pasture-ground, meadow
7) [line 39] MISHUM SIRCHA D'MASHCHA - (a) on account of the *adhesion* of the skin (because the hide is hard to remove unless the animal drinks before it is slaughtered) (RASHI); (b) According to the Girsa D'IY IKA SIRCHA MISHTAMET - if there is a Sircha on the lung it will come off (RABEINU CHANANEL, RIF -- see the Rashbam's comment on this in a marginal note on the Rif, cited in the Hagahos to Dikdukei Sofrim #80)

8) [line 41] REVI'AH RISHONAH - the first of the early rains
9) [last line] PATZ'ILEI TEMARAH - (a) dates that do not ripen naturally that are placed in baskets made from palm branches to ripen (RASHI); (b) dates that are picked before they are ripe that are placed in baskets made from palm branches to ripen (RASHI to Shabbos 45b); (c) young good-quality dates that are picked before they ripen and are then split and placed on the roof to dry (TOSFOS); (c) cracked dates (the process of cracking helps them ripen and dry out) that begin to spoil at the onset of the drying process, but improve with time, similar to Grogeros and Tzimukim (ARUCH, cited in TOSFOS YESHANIM Shabbos 45b)
