Chagigah 3

CHAGIGAH 3 - Sponsored by the Sugerman families of Montclair, New Jersey and Boca Raton, Florida in memory of: Malka bat Chaim, Dov Beryl ben Eliezer, Genendal bat Mordechai Mechayel, and Israel ben Shmuel.

1)

(a) What do we learn from the 'Gezeirah-Shavah' "Re'iyah" "Re'iyah" from Hakheil?

(b) We learn from the Pasuk in va'Yeilech "Lema'an Yishme'u", that a deaf person is Patur from Hakheil.
What do we initially learn from "Lema'an Yilmedu"?

(c) We repudiate this Derashah from the story of the two dumb nephews of Rebbi Yochanan ben Gudgoda (or of Rebbi).
What is the first part of the story?

(d) After Rebbi prayed for them to be healed, they were found to be conversant in Hilchesa, Sifra and Sifri.
What ...

  1. ... does Hilchesa mean?
  2. ... else had they mastered?
2)
(a) So how *do* we Darshen "Lema'an Yilmedu"?

(b) According to Rav Ashi, even without the story of the two dumb nephews of Rebbi Yochanan ben Gudgoda, "Lema'an Yilmedu" cannot be taken literally (as we at first contended). It *must* mean "Lema'an Yelameidu".
Why is that?

(c) What does Rebbi Tanchum learn (with regard to Re'iyah - via the 'Gezeira h-Shavah' "Re'iyah" "Re'iyah" from Hakheil) from "be'Ozneihem"?

(d) And what do we learn (with regard to Hakheil) from ...

  1. ... "Neged Kol Yisrael"?
  2. ... "Lema'an Yishme'u"?
3)
(a) What does Rebbi Tanchum learn from ...
  1. ... "Shalosh Regalim" (Mishpatim)?
  2. ... "Shalosh Pe'amim" (Ibid.)?
  3. ... "Teramasnah Regel, Raglei Ani, Pa'amei Dalim" (Yeshayah)?
  4. ... "Mah Yafu Pe'amayich ba'Ne'alim Bas Nediv" (Shir ha'Shirim)?
(b) What does Rava Darshen from "Mah Yafu Pe'amayich ba'Ne'alim"?

(c) "Bas Nediv" refers to Avraham Avinu. We learn this from the Pasuk in Tehilim "Nedivei Amim Ne'esafu Am Elokei Avraham".
Why is Avraham (and not Yitzchak and Ya'akov) referred to as 'Nediv'?

(d) From where does Rebbi Tanchum learn that there were snakes and scorpions in the pit into which the brothers threw Yosef?

4)
(a) Rebbi Yochanan ben Berokah and Rebbi Elazar Chisma were reluctant to tell Rebbi Yehoshua what Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah had Darshened in the Beis ha'Medrash the previous day. Rebbi Yehoshua insisted they tell him, adding 'Shabbos shel Mi Haysah'?
What did he mean by that?

(b) What did Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah Darshen from the Pasuk in va'Yeilech "Hakheil es ha'Am, *ha'Anashim, ve'ha'Nashim ve'ha'Taf*"?

(c) Was Rebbi Yehoshua impressed with Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah's Derashah?

(d) He (Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah) also Darshened the Pesukim in Ki Savo "es Hashem He'emarta ha'Yom ... ve'Hu He'emircha ha'Yom".
How did he explain it? Which two other Pesukim support his explanation?

5)

(a) What did Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah (see also Rabeinu Chananel and Hagahos ha'Rav Renshberg) also Darshen from the Pasuk in Koheles "Divrei Chachamim ke'Dorbonos ...
"? What is the connection between the words of the Chachamim (i.e. Torah she'be'Al Peh) and the goad of a plow-share?

(b) Why does the Pasuk then need to add ...

  1. ... "u'ke'Mismaros"?
  2. ... "Netu'im"?
6)
(a) "Ba'alei Asupos" refers to he groups of Talmidei-Chachamim learning together, some of whom rule, Tamei, others Tahor; some say Asur, others, Mutar; some rule Pasul, others Kasher.
What problem does this create?

(b) How does the final phrase "Kulan Nitnu me'Ro'eh Echad" alleviates the problem?

(c) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Yisro "va'Yedaber Elokim es Kol ha'Devarim ha'Eileh"?

(d) Is one permitted to accept one opinion and ignore the other?

7) What did Rebbi Yehoshua finally exclaim in praise of Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah?

8)

(a) Rebbi Yochanan ben Berokah and Rebbi Elazar Chisma were initially reluctant to tell Rebbi Yehoshua what Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah had taught the previous day because of a similar incident that had occurred.
With whom had the incident occurred?

(b) Rebbi Yossi ben Durmaskis told him 'Nimnu ve'Gamru: Amon u'Mo'av Me'asrin Ma'aser Ani bi'Shevi'is'.
What is the basis for this Halachah?

(c) Why was he so upset with Rebbi Yossi ben Durmaskis? What is the source of the Halachah?

(d) He decreed that he becomes blind.
Did he remain blind?

9)
(a) The Beraisa defines a Shoteh in three ways, two of them: as one who takes solitary walks in the middle of the night and one who sleeps overnight in a cemetery.
What is the third definition?

(b) According to Rav Huna, he is only a Shoteh if he performs all three of them.
What does Rebbi Yochanan say?

(c) What will the disputants say about someone who does these things in a normal manner?

10)
(a) If a Shoteh is acting abnormally, why, according to Rebbi Yochanan, does the Tana not certify him even if for just ...
  1. ... sleeping overnight in a cemetery?
  2. ... taking solitary walks at night?
  3. ... tearing clothes?
(b) If that is so, then how does the fact that he now performs all three make any difference? How do we learn this from a goring ox?
