Eruvin 9

ERUVIN 6-11 - sponsored by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Kollel Iyun Hadaf is indebted to him for his encouragement and support and prays that Hashem will repay him in kind.

1) [line 8] LAVUD
(a) Lavud (lit. a branch or connection) is a Halachah l'Moshe mi'Sinai that states that when there is a gap of less than three full Tefachim (or four, according to Raban Shimon ben Gamliel) in a Mechitzah, it is considered as if the two sides of the gap are connected, and the Mechitzah is solid. That is, the gap is ignored.
(b) In the case discussed in our Gemara, if there are less than three (or four, according to RSB'G) Tefachim between the Korah and the surface next to it, we consider it as if the Korah actually reaches to the surface next to it. (See also Background to Eruvin 4:22)

2) [line 13] CHAVOT - (lit. press down) Consider the Korah to be pressed down, at the height of the walls of the Mavoy

3) [line 16] PUK TANI L'VARA - Go out and teach your Beraisa outside [of the Beis ha'Midrash] (i.e. your Beraisa is incorrect)

4) [line 21] L'KATEF ALAV - to put their burden on it in order to rearrange the burden on their shoulder

5) [line 28] YATZIVA B'AR'A, V'GIYORA BI'SHMEI SHEMAYA!? - (lit. how can the citizen be down on the ground, while the [lowly] visitor is [high above him] in the upper heavens?) how is it possible to say that when the entrance to the Mavoy opens onto a Reshus ha'Rabim it is permissible to carry there without a separate Lechi, but when it opens onto a Karmelis it is forbidden to carry there without another Lechi?

6) [line 29] MATZA MIN ES MINO V'NEI'OR - (lit. it found its own kind and was aroused) the two similar Reshuyos (the entrance to the Mavoy and the Karmelis) join, creating a situation where it becomes forbidden to carry there (without another Lechi)

7) [line 32] MAVOY SHE'RETZAFO B'LECHAYAYIN PACHOS PACHOS ME'ARBA'AH - a Mavoy in which a row of Lechi's (e.g. planks) were placed, one after the other, less than four Tefachim (but more than three Tefachim) from each other

9b---------------------------------------9b

8) [line 10] NIR'EH MI'BIFNIM V'SHAVEH MI'BACHUTZ - see Graphic #
9) [line 30] D'MIPALGEI TUVA - that the walls of the small Chatzer that enter the large Chatzer are far away from the walls of the large Chatzer (much more than three Tefachim on each side)
