Eruvin 14

ERUVIN 11-15 sponsored by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Kollel Iyun Hadaf is indebted to him for his encouragement and support and prays that Hashem will repay him in kind.

1) [line 2] MALBIN LEI B'TINA - he smears its sides with mud
2) [line 6] MA'AMIDEI KORAH - the poles or pegs supporting the Korah
3) [line 10] MACHATZALES - a mat
4) [line 12] MICHASYA - it is covered

5) [line 13] MECHITZAH SHE'HAGEDIYIM BOK'IN BAH
(a) The Torah requires Mechitzos (partitions) for various Halachos (e.g. for Reshus ha'Yachid of Shabbos and for Sukah). A Mechitzah must be ten Tefachim high and enclose an area of four by four Tefachim.
(b) One contingent necessary for a Kosher Mechitzah is that small goats cannot get under it. If goats can enter under it, the Mechitzah does not truly "enclose" the area inside of it, and is invalid.refore, a gap at the bottom of a Mechitzah that is larger than three Tefachim invalidates it. Any gap that is less than three Tefachim is considered filled in according to the Halachah l'Moshe mi'Sinai of Lavud (see Background to Eruvin 4:22).

6) [line 21] HA'MAS'IMOS - that are laying side by side
7) [line 39] ASNAYEI - teach him
8) [line 47] L'AMSHUCHEI BASRAH - he will carry out of the Mavoy into Reshush ha'Rabim up to the curvature of the Korah

9) [line 49] "VA'YA'AS ES HA'YAM ..." - "And he made a molten sea, ten Amos from one brim to the other. It was round all about, and its height was five Amos. And a line of thirty Amos circled it." (Melachim I 7:23) - see Insights.

10) [line 50] SEFAS PERACH SHOSHAN - its edge was [the width of a petal of] a lily flower

11) [line 50] "V'AVYO TEFACH ..." - "And it was one Tefach thick, and its brim was wrought like the brim of a cup, like the petals of a lily. It contained two thousand Bas." (ibid. 7:26)

14b---------------------------------------14b

12) [line 4] GARMIDEI - Amos
13) [line 4] LI'TELAS ME'AH, ME'AH - three hundred cubic Amos contain the water of one hundred Mikva'os

14) [line 5] L'ME'AH V'CHAMSHIN, CHAMSHIN - one hundred fifty cubic Amos contain the water of fifty Mikva'os

*15*) [line 12] ELA EIMA CHADA - perhaps it was only round on the top one Amah of its five Amah height. (The Gemara could also have suggested that it was *not* square at all, and it held *less* than 150 Mikva'os.)

16) [line 13] GERIVEI - Se'in
17) [line 14] GUDSHA - the heaping measure (that which sticks out above the rim of the utensil) of a dry substance

18) [line 15] HAI GUDSHA, TILSA HEVI - the heaping measure (that which sticks out above the rim of the utensil) is equal to a *third* [of the ensuing total] (i.e. it adds another *half* of the volume of the utensil when measuring dry items)

19) [line 15] SHIDAH - a large chest which is used as a bench in a woman's carriage
20) [line 15] TEIVAH - a chest
21) [line 15] MIGDAL - (O.F. mestier) a cupboard
22) [line 15] KAVERES HA'KASH - a straw basket or bee hive
23) [line 15] KAVERES HA'KANIM - a wicker basket or bee hive
24) [line 16] BOR SEFINAH ALEKSANDERIS - the large barrel used for taking fresh water on an ocean voyage

25) [line 16] SHULAYIM - a bottom
26) [line 17] KURAYIM - which can hold two Kur (sixty Se'in) of dry measure
27) [line 22] K'CHUT HA'SARBAL - as [thin as] the string used to tighten the collar of a cloak

28) [line 28] HILMEI - (O.F. salmuire) brine
*29*) [line 29] B'LECHAYAYIN LO AMART LAN - you did not tell us that the Halachah is not like Rebbi Yosi regarding the requirement to have two Lechis. (Rav Yosef, who made the original statement, forgot his learning and periodically had to be reminded by his students of what he had once taught them.)

30) [line 33] HA'ELOKIM! AMARAH! - He indeed said it!! (using "ha'Elokim," which is an oath, for emphasis)

31) [line 33] U'GEMIRNAH LAH MINEI - and I learned it from him
32) [line 34] MISHUM D'REBBI YOSI, NIMUKO IMO - because Rebbi Yosi always offers a clear reasoning for his rulings. (However, the Halachah follows Rebbi Yosi only when he argues with an individual sage. In these cases he is arguing with the Rabanan - Korban Nesanel 19:6)

33) [line 35] PUK CHAZI MAI AMA D'VAR - go out and see how the people on the outside [of the Beis ha'Midrash] act

34) [line 35] LI'TZEMA'O - to quench his thirst
