Eruvin 24

ERUVIN 24 - Dedicated by Shari and Jay Gold and family in memory of Rav Dov ben Dovid Meir (Bennett Gold), whose Yahrzeit is 3 Sivan

1) [line 11] SHE'ASUYIN ITZTABLA'OS - (a) the trees are planted in rows (RASHI, ARUCH); (b) the trees are planted next to each other like horses in their *stables* (RABEINU CHANANEL, ARUCH)

2) [line 13] CHAZANHU - he saw (them)

3) [line 23] KLEI BA'ALEI BATIM
Since home owners try to make the most out of their utensils, a bowl that cracks is still useful (and therefore is still Mekabel Tum'ah) until the hole becomes so large that pomegranates may fall through. At that point the utensil will no longer be Mekabel Tum'ah.

4) [line 27] TAMEI MIDRAS
(a) A Zav (see Background to Shabbos 83:2a), Zavah (see Background to Shabbos 83:2b), Nidah (see Background to Shabbos 82:30a) or Yoledes, can cause objects that are *under* them to become Avos ha'Tum'ah whether they touch them or not. The objects become Tamei Midras (lit. an object that is treaded upon), otherwise known as Mishkav or Moshav (or the *Tachton*, of a Zav, Zavah, etc.) An object under a Zav, etc. becomes a Midras only if it was made for lying, sitting, or leaning upon. Earthenware objects (Klei Cheres) cannot become Midras.
(b) A person who *touches* (Maga) or *carries* (Masa) either a Midras (or a Zav, etc. themselves), along with the clothes he is wearing and other utensils (except for earthenware utensils) that he is touching at the time, get the status of Rishon l'Tum'ah.

5) [line 32] PANIM CHADASHOS BA'U L'CHAN - a new appearance, i.e. a new entity has emerged

6) [line 33] LEIS DEIN BAR ENASH - this one (Rebbi Yochanan) is not a human (but rather an angel)

7) [line 35] RECHAVAH - an enclosed area behind a house
8) [line 40] BEI DAREI - a threshing floor

24b---------------------------------------24b

9) [line 1] D'CHAZYAN L'TASHMISHTA - they are fit to be used (for drinking)
10) [line 4] SHE'EIN B'OMKO YOSER MI'BEIS SE'ASAYIM - the water is not ten Tefachim deep over an area greater than Beis Se'asayim

11) [line 6] KARYA D'PEIREI - a heap of grain; alt., a pit filled with crops
12) [line 7] PUM NAHARA - the name of a place in Bavel
13) [line 8] L'MASA - to [a Mavoy of] the city
14) [line 9] SHEVIL SHEL KERAMIM - a path through vineyards which had houses and courtyards opening onto it

15) [line 10] GUDA D'NAHARA - a river bank (which was ten Tefachim high)

16) [line 13] TZURAS HA'PESACH
(a) Certain Halachos, such as the creation of a Reshus ha'Yachid on Shabbos, require the presence of Mechitzos. In the absence of physical Mechitzos, or if there is too broad a breach in a Mechitzah, a Tzuras ha'Pesach may be employed to take the place of a solid wall.
(b) A Tzuras ha'Pesach consists of a primitive doorframe: "One vertical rod on either side, with a horizontal rod lying on top of them" (Eruvin 11b). The area inside of the Tzuras ha'Pesach is considered to be a doorway, rather than a breach, and it therefore takes the place of solid wall.
(c) There are a number of conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the Tzuras ha'Pesach to be valid (see Insights to Eruvin 11b, 16b).

17) [line 14] ASU GAMLEI, SHADYAN LEI - camels coming [to the river to drink] will knock it over
