prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Eruvin 17

ERUVIN 16-20 sponsored by a generous grant from an anonymous donor. Kollel Iyun Hadaf is indebted to him for his encouragement and support and prays that Hashem will repay him in kind.

1)

(a) Rav Gidal, quoting Rav, said 'Sheloshah be'Chamesh, Asur, be'Sheva, Mutar'.
Why does this statement appear to make no sense?

(b) How does Rav Ashi explain it?

(c) What will be the problem with this should we explain Rav's statement 'u'Vilevad she'Lo Yehei Beis Sasayim Panuy' (mentioned on the previous Amud) to mean 'Panuy me'Adam'?

(d) What *does* Rav Gidal mean?

2)
(a) If, when Shabbos entered, there were three people, and one of them died, or if there were two people, and one person joined them on Shabbos, Rav Huna and Rav Yitzchak argue what the Din will be. One says 'Shabbos Goremes' What does that mean?

(b) What does the other hold?

(c) Rabah asked Rav Huna and Rav Yehudah what the Din will be if they made an Eruv between two Chatzeros by way of the entrance or by way of the window, and the entrance or the window became blocked on Shabbos.
What exactly was the Sha'aleh, and what did they answer him?

(d) How does this prove who says what in the Sha'aleh quoted in a?

3)
(a) If the walls of a Chatzer break on two sides, or the Koreh or Lechi of a Mavoy are removed, the Mishnah in Kol Gagos cites a Machlokes: according to Rebbi Yehudah, one may continue to carry in the Chatzer or in the Mavoy for the duration of that Shabbos.
What does Rebbi Yossi hold?

(b) It appears that Rav Huna (in the previous question) follows the opinion of Rebbi Yehudah and Rav Yitzchak that of Rebbi Yossi. Is it possible for ...

  1. ... Rav Huna to hold like Rebbi Yossi?
  2. ... Rav Yitzchak to hold like Rebbi Yehudah?
4) After Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Yehudah says that a Mechitzah of both Shesi and Arev is required at home as well as on a journey, the Tana of our Mishnah concludes 'va'Chachamim Omrim "Echad mi'Sh'nei Devarim"'. What is the difference between the Chachamim and the Tana Kama, who also permit a Mechitzah of either one or the other?

5)

(a) Chazal allowed soldiers camping on the battle-ground four concessions:
1. To fetch wood from wherever they could find it; 2. To eat without Netilas Yadayim;
What are the other two?

(b) About Which kind of war are we speaking?

(c) Rebbi Yehudah ben Teima adds two concessions: 1. That they may encamp wherever it suits them.
What is the other one?

6)
(a) The Gemara gives three possible distinctions between the concession of collecting wood from anybody's field (mentioned by our Tana), and the Takanah of Yehoshua, who included a similar concession in his ten Takanos. One of the distinctions is that, whereas Yehoshua permitted only bush-wood, our Tana permits all wood.
What are the other two?

(b) Did Yehoshua also permit cutting someone else's *crops*?

(c) Yehudah ben Teima permits burying a soldier there where he was killed. Is this not synonymous with the Din 'Mes Mitzvah Koneh Mekomo', which applies to everybody - not only to soldiers?

7)

(a) How do we reconcile the Din of 'Mes Mitzvah Koneh Mekomo' with the Beraisa 'ha'Motze Mes Mutal bi'Seratya, Mefanehu li'Yemin Isratya ... '?

(b) What is the order of priorities regarding burying a Mes Mitzvah in 1. an unplowed field, 2. a plowed field, 3. a sown field?

8)
(a) From which Netilas Yadayim are the soldiers exempt, and which Netilas Yadayim do they remain obligated?

(b) Why is Mayim Acharonim more obligatory than Mayim Rishonim?

(c) How common is Melach Sedomis?

(d) Is someone who *weighs* Melach Sedomis obligated to wash Mayim Acharonim?

9)
(a) Which other concession did Chazal grant with regard to Demai?

(b) Why were they so lenient by Demai?

(c) From which Eruv are the soldiers exempt, and which Eruv do they remain obligated - according to Rebbi Yanai? Why the difference?

10)
(a) The Gemara asks how Rebbi Chiya can prescribe Malkus for leaving the Techum on Shabbos, since the Torah writes in Beshalach "Al Yetzei Ish mi'Mekomo". Does this mean that, whenever the Torah uses the word 'Al', there is no Malkus?

(b) What then, *is* the Kashya, according to Rebbi Yonoson?

(c) Rav Ashi answers: 'Mi Kesiv, "Al Yotzi"? "Al Yetzei" Kesiv'. What does he mean?

Hadran Alach, 'Mavoy'!

11)

(a) What is a Deyumad and what is the word the acronym of?

(b) Why are the four Deyumdin necessary, and what do they achieve?

(c) What is 1. the height, 2. the length, 3. the thickness of each Deyumad?

(d) What is the maximum space that is permitted between one Deyumad and the next ...

  1. ... according to Rebbi Meir?
  2. ... according to Rebbi Yehudah?
12)
(a) What is the minimum space that is permitted between the outside of the well and the Deyumad? Why should we gauge the area of the Pasei Bira'os by where *the animal* stands?

(b) How large may the area of the Deyumdin be - according to the Tana Kama?

(c) Rebbi Yehudah permits a maximum area of a Beis Sasayim.
What did the Chachamim say to him about that?
