Eruvin 82

ERUVIN 82 - was generously dedicated by an anonymous donor in Los Angeles in honor of his son, Sam, who lives and teaches in Yerushalayim.

1)

(a) Why is someone who lends on interest or who deals with Shemitah- produce disqualified from testifying in Beis-Din?

(b) According to Rebbi Yehudah, a gambler is disqualified only when he has no other occupation.
Why is he disqualified?

(c) What does the Tana Kama, who disqualifies a gambler from testifying without qualifying it, hold?

2)
(a) The Beraisa explicitly disqualifies a gambler even if he *has* another occupation.
Who is the author of the Beraisa, and why according to him, is a gambler disqualified from testifying?

(b) Rebbi Tarfon's statement is based on what he said with regard to a case of two Safek Nezirim.
What is the case, and what does Rebbi Tarfon say there?

(c) How does his statement there reflect on what he says here?

***** Hadran Alach, 'Perek Chalon!' *****

***** Perek Keitzad Mishtatfin *****

3)

(a) Is it necessary to specify on whose behalf the Eruvei Techumin is being placed?

(b) May one add to the list of participants once Shabbos has already entered?

(c) Rav Yosef permits making an Eruv Techumin only if it is for a Mitzvah. Is there a proof for that from our Mishnah, which specifically mentions a case of Beis ha'Avel or Beis ha'Mishteh?

4)
(a) Why does Rav Ashi change the wording of our Mishnah from 'Kol *she'Kibel* Alav mi'be'Od Yom, Mutar' to 'Kol *she'Hodi'uhu* mi'be'Od Yom'?

(b) Rav Asi gives the maximum age of a child who will automatically go after his mother's Eruv as six.
What is the maximum age given for a child to be Patur from Sucah, and why is that?

(c) Bei Rebbi Yanai describes a minor who is no longer tied to his mother's apron strings as one whose mother no longer needs to clean him when he goes to the bathroom.
How does Resh Lakish describe him?

(d) How does Rav Yehoshua brei de'Rav Idi reconcile this Sugya with Rav Asi, who gives the Katan's age as six?

Answers to questions

5)

(a) We refute Rav Yehoshua brei de'Rav Idi's answer from the Beraisa 'Katan she'Tzarich le'Imo, Yotze be'Eruv Imo ad ben Shesh'.
Why can we not answer that the Beraisa too, speaks when his father, as well as his mother, made an Eruv?

(b) How will ...

  1. ... Rav Asi (in whose opinion a six-year old is still included in the Eruv) explain the Beraisa?
  2. ... Rebbi Yanai and Resh Lakish (who give the age of a minor in this regard as four or five explain the Beraisa?
6)
(a) Can one make an Eruv on behalf of ...
  1. ... one's wife or grown-up son, or of one's Jewish servants - against their will?
  2. ... one's small children or one's non-Jewish slaves - against their will?
(b) If a man makes an Eruv on behalf of his wife, and she does not protest, can she say on Shabbos that she never intended to go by his Eruv?

(c) Besides by way of a verbal protest, how could she demonstrate her protest?

(d) Does this also apply to one's grown-up son or Jewish servant?

7)
(a) Rebbi Meir holds that the Shiur of two Se'udos for each person is gauged by weekday-meals; Rebbi Yehudah, by Shabbos-meals.
What is the basis of their Machlokes?

(b) Does one gauge the two meals by one's own appetite and eating habits, or are they fixed?

(c) Why did Rabah rule in our Mishnah like Rebbi Meir, in spite of the general principle 'Rebbi Meir ve'Rebbi Yehudah, Halachah ke'Rebbi Yehudah'?

8)
(a) 'Rebbi Yochanan ben Berokah Omer, mi'Kikar be'Pundi'on me'Arba Sa'in be'Sela'. How many ...
  1. ... Pundi'onin are there in a Sela?
  2. ... Kabin are there in a Sa'ah?
(b) If a loaf made of four Sa'ah costs one Sela, what size loaf would one receive for a Pundi'on?

(c) Rebbi Shimon gives a slightly smaller Shiur; according to him, a Kav of bread provides nine meals. The amount required for the two meals of an Eruv is two thirds of a loaf that is one third of a Kav (i.e. two ninths of a Kav).
What does 'Chetzyah le'Beis ha'Menuga' mean?

(d) Half that Shiur is the amount a Kohen needs to eat to attain the status of 'Pesul Gevi'ah'.
What exactly is Pesul Gevi'ah?

9)
(a) The Beraisa states that the Shiur of Rebbi Yochanan ben Berokah and that of Rebbi Shimon are close. But that is impossible, asks the Gemara, because the one is four, and the other nine!
What does this mean? What is the Kashya?

(b) Take off a third, answers the Gemara.
A third for what purpose? And how does this answer the Kashya?

(c) The Gemara however, is not satisfied with this answer, since the difference between six to a Kav and nine to a Kav can still not be termed *close*.
So how much *do* we need to deduct for the baker, and how close are the two Shiurim?

10) How does the Gemara reconcile the two statements of Rav Chisda, one where the store-keeper deducts a third, and the other, a half.
