Kesuvos 6

KESUVOS 6-9 - have been anonymously dedicated by a unique Ohev Torah and Marbitz Torah living in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel.

1)

(a) What did Rav Shimi bar Chizkiyah Amar Rav say about stopping up the outlet of a barrel of wine with rags?

(b) How do we reconcile this ruling with de'Bei Rav, who ruled leniently with regard to the first Bi'ah (presumably because of 'Davar she'Ein Miskaven')?

(c) How do we then reconcile Rav's lenient ruling by Bi'ah with the fact that he rules like Rebbi Yehudah (by Davar she'Ein Miskaven) - in two ways?

2)
(a) According to Beis Shamai (in a Mishnah in Nidah), if a girl marries before she is due to have a period, we give her four nights.
What does this mean?

(b) Until when is she called not due to have a period?

(c) What do Beis Hillel say?

(d) If she *is* due, then, according to Beis Shamai, we give her one night only.
What do Beis Hillel say?

3)

(a) How does Rava try to reconcile the latter statement of Beis Hillel (which implies that we give a girl who is due to have a period, four days, including Shabbos) with those who forbid the first Bi'ah on Shabbos?

(b) What is the problem with that explanation?

(c) So Rava establishes the Beraisa when the marriage has already been consummated. In that case, we conclude, the Tana needs to add 'ad Motza'ei Shabbos', because of Shmuel.
What did Shmuel say with regard to a 'Pirtzah Dechukah'? How does that apply here?

4)
(a) How does Abaye explain the Mishnah in B'rachos 'Chasan Patur mi'K'ri'as Sh'ma ... ad Motza'ei Shabbos im Lo Asah Ma'aseh' (vis-a-vis Shabbos), according to those who forbid the first Bi'ah on Shabbos? If he is not Patur because of the Bi'as Mitzvah, then why is he Patur?

(b) On what grounds does Rava reject Abaye's explanation?

(c) What ruling did Rav Aba bar Zavda Amar Rav issue concerning an Aveil, based on the Pasuk in Yechezkel "Pe'er"? What does Rava derive from there?

(d) How will Abaye counter Rava's Kashya on him?

5)
(a) So how will Rava reconcile those who forbid the first Bi'ah on Shabbos with the Mishnah in B'rachos?

(b) The Tana'im of both Beraisos quoted by Rava exempt a Chasan from K'ri'as Sh'ma on the first two nights if he has not yet consummated the marriage. On the third night however, one of them obligates him.
Why is that ...

  1. ... according to Rava?
  2. ... according to Abaye?
(c) In another Beraisa, the Tana Kama forbids the first Bi'ah. Who is the Chachamim who permit it?

(d) Abaye asked Rabah how this could be, seeing as Rebbi Shimon concedes that 'P'sik Reisha' is forbidden.
What did Rabah reply?

6)
(a) If so many people are experts, on what grounds did Chazal exempt a Chasan from K'ri'as Sh'ma? What is he worried about?

(b) Does this imply that an expert is permitted to consummate his marriage on Shabbos, and someone who is not, is forbidden?

(c) We will learn later that they would appoint two groomsmen to prevent the Chasan from falsely claiming that the Kalah was no longer a Besulah. Seeing as most people are experts in avoiding bleeding anyway, what is the purpose of the groomsmen, and of the cloth which they would later inspect?

(d) What will then happen if there were no bloodstains, and the husband claimed that she was no longer a Besulah?

7)
(a) Someone who squeezes a boil on Shabbos, in order to extract the pus, is Patur.
When will he be Chayav? Why is that?

(b) What does Patur mean in this Beraisa?

(c) What Kashya did Rebbi Ami ask from this Beraisa?

(d) How do we answer this Kashya? What is 'Pakid ve'Akir', and what is 'Pakid ve'Lo Akir'?
