prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Kesuvos 65

1)

(a) How does Rebbi Yehudah Ish K'far Giboraya or Ish K'far Gibor Chayil finally prove from the Pasuk in Shmuel "va'Takam Chanah Acharei Ochloh ve'Acharei Shasoh" that a woman should not drink wine?

(b) On what grounds do we reject the proof from the word "Shasah", 've'Lo Shasas'?

(c) A woman who is used to drinking may indeed drink wine.
How does Abaye explain Rav Chinena bar Kahana Amar Shmuel, who said 'Regilah, Nosnin Lah Kos Echad, she'Einah Regilah, Nosnin Lah Sh'nei Kosos'?

(d) Then which case does Rebbi Elazar (at the foot of the previous Amud) refer to (see Tosfos DH 'Regilah)?

2)
(a) Alternatively, for a woman who was used to drinking wine they would fix wine to add to her cooked dish (but not to drink on its own).
What story did Rebbi Avahu Amar Rebbi Yochanan tell about the daughter-in-law of Nakdimon ben Guri'on?

(b) Why did they not answer 'Amein' to her B'rachah?

3)
(a) According to the Tana of the Beraisa, one cup of wine is good for a woman.
What does he say about ...
  1. ... two cups?
  2. ... three cups?
  3. ... four cups?
(b) The Tana confines this to a woman on her own, but in front of her husband, she is permitted to drink.
How do we reconcile this with Chanah, who refrained from drinking wine even in the presence of her husband?

(c) What does Rav Huna infer from the Pasuk in Shmuel "va'Yashkimu ba'Boker ... va'Yashuvu va'Yavo'u el Beisam ha'Ramasah, va'Yeida Elkanah es Chanah Ishto ... "?

4)
(a) Why did Rava initially decline to fix wine for Chomah (Abaye's widow) when she came to the Beis-Din to claim Mezonos?

(b) What did Chomah reply?

(c) What happened when she demonstrated the long goblets that Abaye used to drink from? What effect did that have on Rava?

(d) When Rava's wife discovered who was responsible for Rava's mood, she was not impressed with Chomah.
What did she do? Why was she so hard on her?

5)
(a) On what grounds did Rav Nechemyah Brei de'Rav Yosef fix wine for the widow of Rav Yosef Brei de'Rava?

(b) Rav Yosef fixed Mezonos and wine for the widow of Rav Yosef Brei de'Rav Menashyah mi'Davil. When he asked her why she wanted fine woollen garments, she replied 'Lach u'le'Chavrech u'le'Chavrusech'.
What did she mean by that?

6)
(a) What do we mean when we ask why the husband (in our Mishnah) needs to arrange for his wife to receive both a mat and a blanket (see Tosfos DH 'Mapatz)?

(b) How do we answer that?

7)
(a) According to the Tana Kama in the Beraisa, a woman does not receive a cushion and a cover. What does Rebbi Nasan say?

(b) What would be the Din if it was ...

  1. ... the way of her family to sleep with them?
  2. ... neither the way of her family nor of his to sleep with them?
(c) We establish the Machlokes when it was his way but not hers to sleep with a cushion and with a cover.
Then why does the Tana Kama not require the husband to arrange for his wife to receive them?

(d) How does Rebbi Nasan counter that argument?

Answers to questions

8)

(a) On what grounds does the Tana expect a man to arrange for his wife to receive three pairs of shoes annually but only one set of clothes?

(b) Then why specifically on Yom-Tov?

(c) How did Abaye know that when the Tana speaks of clothes to the value of fifty Zuz he means 'fifty Zuz *Medinah*'? What is the difference between a Zuz Medinah and a Zuz Tzuri?

9)
(a) We have already learned that the worn-out clothes belong to the woman. Who takes the leftovers of Mezonos? What do the leftovers of Mezonos comprise?

(b) Of what use are the worn-out clothes to the woman?

(c) Who takes the worn-out clothes of an Almanah (who is fed and clothed by the heirs in the same way as she was by her husband)?

10)
(a) Our Mishnah says 'Ocheles Imo mi'Leilei Shabbos le'Leilei Shabbos'. According to Rav Nachman, 'Ocheles' means literally eats.
How does Rav Ashi interpret it?

(b) How does he prove this from the Pasuk in Mishlei "Achlah u'Machsah Piyhah ve'Amrah Lo Pa'alti Avon"?

(c) In which connection does Rav Huna refer to Yisrael as 'Kedoshim'?

(d) In that case, how will Rav Ashi explain the Beraisa, 'Raban Shimon ben Gamliel Omer, Ocheles be'Leilei Shabbos *ve'Shabbos*?

11)
(a) Chazal have said that one is not obligated to sustain one's children. Until what age does Rebbi Ula Rabah maintain that a father must nevertheless do so?

(b) What does this have to do with the ruling of Rav Asi, that a child of six follows the Eiruv of his mother?

(c) How do we refute the proof from our Mishnah which rules that, if a woman is feeding, her husband must arrange more Mezonos? Why might this not be ...

  1. ... because of the baby?
  2. ... because of the baby, despite the fact that the Tana says 'because she is feeding', and not 'because she is sick'?
(d) We learned in our Mishnah that a man must arrange extra Mezonos for his wife when she is feeding.
How does Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi explain this?
**** Hadran Alach 'Af-al-pi' *****

***** Perek Metzi'as Ishah *****

12)

(a) A woman's findings and the work of her hands goes to her husband.
What happens to things that she inherits?

(b) According to the Tana Kama, the shame and depreciation that she sustains if somebody wounds her, belongs to her.
What does Rebbi Yehudah ben Beseira say about ...

  1. ... wounds that are not covered?
  2. ... wounds that are covered?
13) Considering that the Tana already discussed the obligations of a woman towards her husband in Perek Na'arah she'Nispatsah, why does he need to repeat them in our Mishnah?
