1a) [line 1] K'TZIPOREI B'FI HA'VESHET - like a rope with a knot in it passing through a loop-hole (that resembles the trachea) in the mast, i.e. the pain felt as the soul leaves the body is very great (RAN)
b) [line 1] K'FITUREI B'FI VESHET - like the knots of ropes with which two ships are tied together, drawn through the holes in the ships. (The Aruch explains that these ropes were chosen to depict the moment of death because they are removed only with great difficulty.)
