FOOTNOTES:
==========
(1) This refers only to initiating a verbal greeting. It is permitted to nod one's head as one does when greeting his friend (RITVA 27a).
(2) The first 3 days of Aveilus are the most stringent, since the body of the deceased has not yet begun to decompose and to provide atonement for the soul (see Shabbos 151b).
(3) Instead of returning the greeting, the Avel should reply, "I am an Avel."
(4) It is permitted, however, for the Avel to initiate a greeting to a large group.
(5) For the sake of peace, it is permitted to return a greeting of "Shalom" to one who initiated a greeting unaware that the person is an Avel.
(6) It is permitted, though, to comfort him "indirectly" ("Min ha'Tzad"), which means comforting the Avel without mentioning the name of the deceased. When one is an Avel for a parent, it is permitted to comfort him until 12 months have passed.
(7) The Heter to greet an Avel with "Shalom" applies only when he is mourning for a relative who is not his parent. It is prohibited to greet one who is an Avel for a parent until 12 months have passed.
