Nazir 52

1) [line 1] DISKARTA - This is probably the name of a place. The word means private town, settlement, or part of a town (e.g. (d'Iskarta) [Diskarta] d'Reish Galusa - the private town of the Reish Galusa -- Eruvin 59a)

2) [line 1] "[ELEH HA'TEME'IM LACHEM B'CHOL HA'SHARETZ; KOL HA'NOGE'A] BAHEM [B'MOSAM YITMA AD HA'AREV.]" - "[These are the Teme'im to you among all that creep (Sheratzim); whoever touches] them, [when they are dead, shall be Tamei until nightfall.]" (Vayikra 11:31) (MEFARESH; this is also the verse referred to by the TOSFOS and the ROSH, even though they quote the words, "*Asher Yiga* Bahem," which is not a verse)

3) [line 2] "[V'CHOL ASHER YIPOL ALAV] MEHEM [B'MOSAM YITMA...]" - "[If] any of these [dead creeping things (Sheratzim) falls on anything, it shall become Tamei, whether it is a wooden utensil, a garment, leather, or sackcloth, any utensil with which work is done; it shall be brought into (a Mikvah) of water and it shall remain Tamei (to a lesser degree) until evening, and them become Tahor.]" (Vayikra 11:32) (MEFARESH); alt. "[V'CHOL KLI CHERES ASHER YIPOL] MEHEM [EL TOCHO; KOL ASHER B'SOCHO YITMA V'OSO SISHBORU.]" - "[And every earthenware utensil, in which] any of them [falls, whatever is in it shall be Tamei; and you shall break it.]" (ibid. 11:33) (TOSFOS)

4) [line 4] K'ADASHAH (TUM'AS SHERETZ)
A Sheretz, even if it is only the size of an Adashah (lentil bean) is an Av ha'Tum'ah. It makes a person or object Tamei through Maga (contact). If a person becomes Tamei by touching a Sheretz, he can immediately immerse in a Mikvah. After nightfall he becomes Tahor and may eat Terumah or Kodshim.

5) [line 4] HA'CHOMET - (O.F. limace) snail (RASHI Chagigah 11a); alt., a lizard or the skink, a lizard with small legs of which there are four varieties in the Holy Land

6) [line 11] GIRED - (a) broke (TOSFOS); (b) cut (ROSH); (c) detached them from the spinal column (MEFARESH)

7) [line 12] IL'IN - ribs
8a) [line 12] MESHUBERES - [if the spinal column is] broken, crushed
b) [line 13] MEFUREKES - [if the spinal column is] taken apart (i.e. the vertebrae are pulled apart)

9) [line 13] MIPNEI HA'KEVER - because the grave [unites the broken or separated pieces -- TOSFOS. See the Tosefta Ohalos 2:3]

10) [line 19] BEIS HA'KENESES SHEL TARSIYIM - the synagogue of (a) the coppersmiths (TOSFOS, ROSH, MEFARESH, RASHI to Shabbos 47a, 1st explanation); (b) Tarsians, people who came from Tarsus (MEFARESH, RASHI to Megilah 13b, TOSFOS to Chulin 57b DH Matlis, ARUCH); (c) weavers (MEFARESH, RASHI to Shabbos 47a, 2nd explanation)

11) [line 20] V'HINICHUHA BA'AVIR - and they placed it in the open area (lit. air) of the synagogue [where there was no roof that would make an Ohel]

52b---------------------------------------52b

12) [line 2] (SIMAN YACHID (SHE'HU) [SHE'CHAI] GILE'ACH (V'ECHAD) [V'HADAR]) - this is a mnemonic device for remembering the four suggested answers of our Sugya, respectively.

  2. (*she'Hu*) [*she'Chai*] refers to Ever Min *ha'Chai* (line 7)
  3. *Gile'ach* refers to Kol Heicha d'Nazir *Megale'ach* Al Ahilo (line 8)
  4. (*v'Echad*) [*v'Hadar*] refers to Kol Heicha *d'Hadar* Bei (line 10)
13) [line 9] AHILO - (from the word "Ohel" - tent) being in the same covered space that is at least one Tefach in length, width and height

14) [line 13] LIMUDO SHEL REBBI AKIVA B'YADO - (lit. his teaching is in his hand, i.e. his mouth) he was known to have reviewed all of his teachings many times, and I never heard from anyone that he retracted this ruling (SHITAH MEKUBETZES)

15) [line 14] "V'AL KOL NAFSHOS MES LO YAVO" - "Neither shall he go [near] to any dead body, [nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother.]" (Vayikra 21:11) - the word Nefesh, which refers to blood, is in the plural (GEMARA above, Daf 49b)

16) [line 18] ATZAMIM - bones
17) [line 18] MI'SHENAYIM O MI'SHELOSHAH - (a) from two or three bones (TOSFOS); (b) even from two or three bodies (TIFERES YISRAEL to Eduyos 1:7); (c) *even* from a mixture of large bones of the Rov Binyan and small bones of the Rov Minyan (see Background to Nazir 50:3) (Yesh Omrim cited by the TIFERES YISRAEL ibid.)

18) [line 19] ROVA MIN HA'GEVIYAH - the Rova ha'Kav of bones that is Metamei Tum'as Ohel must be (a) from the main part of the body, i.e. either from the bones of the Rov Binyan or from the Rov Minyan (majority) of the 248 Eivarim of the body (TOSFOS); (b) from one body (TIFERES YISRAEL ibid.); (c) *either* from only large bones of the Rov Binyan *or* from only small bones of the Rov Minyan (Yesh Omrim cited by the TIFERES YISRAEL ibid.)
