Nedarim 81

NEDARIM 81 - dedicated by Mrs. G. Turkel (Rabbi Kornfeld's grandmother), an exceptional woman who accepted all of Hashem's Gezeiros with love and who loved and respected the study of Torah. Tehei Nafshah Tzerurah bi'Tzror ha'Chaim.

1) [line 2] IRBUVISA - dirt
2) [line 3] AVIRA - blindness
3) [line 4] SHI'AMUMISA - dullness, bewilderment
4) [line 5] SHICHNEI - boils, sores
5) [line 5] KEIVEI - pains
6) [line 7] "YIZAL MAYIM MI'DALYAV..." - "He shall pour the water out of his buckets, [and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.]" (Bamidbar 24:7) - Water represents Torah (Sifri 32:2 and elsewhere). Our Gemara interprets the word "Dalyav" ("his buckets") as "his poor people," from the word "Dal," which means poor or needy. (EIN YAKOV)

7) [line 9] SHE'LO YOMERU, "TORAH -- YERUSHAH HI LAHEM" - (a) so that the sons of the Talmidei Chachamim do not say that the Torah is their inheritance, and as a result they do not put in the effort to learn it (TOSFOS, RAN); (b) so that the *common people* do not say that the Torah is only the inheritance of the Talmidei Chachamim, and as a result they do not learn it, convinced that they will not succeed (ROSH, 1st explanation)

8) [line 11] SHE'LO YISGADRU - so that they should not become conceited; so that they should not be presumptuous towards the people and lord over them

9) [line 12] MIPNEI SHE'HEN MISGABRIN - because they definitely would become conceited

10) [line 16] "MI HA'ISH HE'CHACHAM V'YAVEIN ES ZOS..." - "Who is the wise man, that may understand this? [And who is he to whom the mouth of HaSh-m has spoken, that he may declare it? Why does the land perish and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passes through?]" (Yirmeyahu 9:11)

11) [line 18] "VA'YOMER..." - "And HaSh-m said, 'Because they have forsaken My Torah [which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice, nor walked in it;']" (Yirmeyahu 9:12)

81b---------------------------------------81b

12) [line 1] AFAR PIR - the dirt of his den (something to which he is accustomed)
13) [line 9] LO EKCHOL - I will not paint my eyelids with a blue or tinted powder
14) [line 9] LO EFKOS - (a) I will not color my face red by applying mud or rouge to my face (RASHI Kesuvos 4b; see TOSFOS to Moed Katan 9b DH Pokeses and RASHI to Shabbos 64b DH v'Lo Sifkos); (b) I will not part my hair with a comb or my hands (RASHI to Mo'ed Katan 9b DH Pokeses); (c) I will not braid my hair (RASHI to Kesuvos 17a)

15) [last line] NETULAH ANI MIN HA'YEHUDIM - (lit. "I am removed from the Jewish people) I have made a vow prohibiting me from having relations with Jewish men (because relations are agonizing to me -- RASHI to Yevamos 112)
