Pesachim 14

PESACHIM 14 - has been sponsored through a generous gift from Mr. Eli Rosengarten of Zurich, Switzerland, and family

NOTE: OUR CHARTS AND INSIGHTS SECTIONS INCLUDE A COMPREHENSIVE AND DETAILED INTRODUCTION TO THE SUGYA OF "REBBI CHANINA SEGAN HA'KOHANIM," WHICH STARTS HERE AND CONTINUES UNTIL DAF 21

1) [line 1] HAR HA'MISHCHAH - the Mount of Olives
2) [line 17] HA'TELUYAH - Terumah which is Safek Tamei
3) [line 24] VELAD VELAD - a Sheni l'Tum'ah

14b---------------------------------------14b

4) [line 1] CHEREV HAREI HU K'CHALAL (a sword is like a corpse)
(a) Any metal utensil that touched a dead body is given the same level of Tum'ah as the dead body, i.e. it becomes an Avi Avos ha'Tum'ah. Similarly, if a metal utensil touched an Av ha'Tum'ah, it becomes an Av ha'Tum'ah. (A Rishon or Sheni l'Tumah cannot make utensils Tamei.)
(b) According to some Rishonim, this law applies to non-metal utensils (except for earthenware) as well -- see Insights to Pesachim 14b.

5) [line 6] MASNISIN KESHISEI - our Mishnah is difficult for him, i.e. the language of the Mishnah compels him to say this explanation

6) [line 16] KOL HAPOSEL ES HA'TERUMAH, METAMEI MASHKIN LIHEYOS TECHILAH
(All people or items that cause Terumah to become Pesulah, cause liquids to become a Rishon l'Tum'ah)
(a) In general, the various levels of Tum'ah are called, respectively: (1) Av ha'Tum'ah, (2) Rishon l'Tum'ah, (3) Sheni l'Tum'ah and (4) Shelishi l'Tum'ah. If Terumah becomes a Shelishi, it is Pesulah.
(b) The Chachamim decreed that liquids that are touched by any Sheni l'Tum'ah (i.e. something that can be Posel Terumah) become a Rishon l'Tum'ah, so that people will be more careful to guard liquids against Tum'ah. This decree was made because it is far easier for liquids to become Tamei, since they need no separate process of Hechsher. Their Hechsher occurs at one and the same time that the Tum'ah touches them (Pesachim 18b).
