FOOTNOTES:
==========
(1) Tosfos writes (26b, DH Rebbi Shimon Ben Elazar) that according to Abaye we find no one who differentiates between three by three Tefachim and three by three Etzba'os.
(2) At first (26b) Rava said that they do not become Tamei, but later (27a) the Gemara is in doubt whether Rava retracted his original statement and said that they can become Tamei if they are 3 X 3 Tefachim, or whether he maintained his original opinion that they cannot become Tamei at all.
(3) This is not clarified in the Gemara.
(4) According to Rav Papa, Tana d'Vei Rebbi Yishma'el is only teaching that other types of garments are not included in the prohibition of Kela'im (Shatnez). According to Rav Nachman Bar Yitzchak, Tana d'Vei Rebbi Yishma'el is only teaching that other types of garments are exempt from Tzitzis. See following footnote.
(5) This is Rashi's understanding of the Sugya. The Ramban, however, argues with Rashi and explains that these garments do not become Tamei according to Rav Papa unless they are 3 X 3 Tefachim (this is also the way the P'nei Yehoshua explains the Sugya) -- see Insights.
