Shabbos 17

1) 13. (of the eighteen decrees) 'Kol ha'Metaltelin Mevi'in es he'Tum'ah be'Uvi ha'Merda'as' (Mishnah - Ohalos).

(a) What does this mean?

(b) Rebbi Tarfon disagrees. According to him, this statement is based on a misunderstanding.
What was that misunderstanding?

(c) Why did he add the words 'Akape'ach es Be'ni'?

(d) How does Rebbi Tarfon make up number 13?

2) Rebbi Akiva agrees with the Tana Kama as far as the basic decree is concerned. In his opinion however, it is only the person who is actually carrying the vessel who is Tamei for seven days, but not other people or vessels underneath it.
Why not?

3) 14. (of the eighteen decrees) 'ha'Botzer le'Gas, Shamai Omer "Huchshar", Hillel Omer "Lo Huchshar"'.
To explain Shamai's reason, the Gemara first suggests that maybe it is because he will pick the grapes with baskets which are already Tamei.

(a) Why should that make it any worse?

(b) Why does the Gemara reject that contention?

(c) Did Shamai's decree extend also to olives?

(a) What has the Machlokes here between Shamai and Hillel to do with 'the eighteen things', which concern disputes between *Beis* Shamai and *Beis* Hillel?

(b) Why did they not accept the original count, which agreed with Shamai?

5) The Gemara finally gives three reasons to explain Shamai (and subsequently Beis Shamai):
1. ... because he might come to pick the grapes with closed baskets.
(a) How does that explain Shamai?

(a) What kind of seeds are we talking about (there are certain seeds that remain Terumah mi'd'Oraysa)?

(b) The Gemara originally gives Beis Shamai's reason as being because of the Terumah Tehorah of a Yisrael. Why is this reason unacceptable?

(c) What then, *is* Beis Shamai's reason for the decree?

7) 16. (of the eighteen decrees) 'Mi she'Hichshich Lo ba'Derech, Nosen Kis'o le'Nochri'.
(a) What exactly, did the Rabbanan decree?
17. (of the eighteen decrees) 'Pitan, ve'Shamnan, ve'Yeinan u'Venoseihen'.
(b) How many decrees is that?

(a) According to Rebbi Meir, we can reckon 'ha'Meni'ach Kelim Tachas ha'Tzinor' and 'Benos Kutim Nidos mei'Arisasan' as two (whereas on Daf 16b, we quoted the former in the name of Rebbi Meir, and the latter in the name of Rebbi Yossi exclusively), in which case we now have our eighteen decrees.
But according to Rebbi Yossi, who does not include 'ha'Meni'ach Kelim' in the decrees, we are still short of one. How does the Gemara now amend decree no. 17?

(b) What does it add ('ve'Al Davar Acher Mishum Davar Acher') to make up number 18, according to Rebbi Yossi?

(c) Rebbi Meir too, agrees with this decree, which means that, according to him, we now have not *eighteen* decrees, but *nineteen*! Which two decrees does the Gemara combine into one, so as to reduce the nineteen decrees to eighteen?

(a) Beis Hillel permit the soaking of ink, dyes and oats (for fodder) on Friday afternoon, irrespective of how much they have soaked before Shabbos comes in.
What do Beis Shamai hold?

(b) Similarly, Beis Hillel permits the placing of bundles of spun flax into the oven to bleach, and wool into a cauldron to dye, even from scratch. What do Beis Shamai hold?

(c) What Shiur do that Beis Shamai permit regarding the placing of animal and bird traps before Shabbos?

(a) Beis Shamai permit one to sell to a non-Jew, to load with him onto a donkey or to lift on to his back, only on condition that he still has time to arrive at his destination before Shabbos.
Why is that?

(b) And how long before Shabbos do Beis Shamai allow one to give skins to a tanner, or hand in one's clothes to a non-Jewish laundry?

(c) What do Beis Hillel hold in all these cases?

(a) What was Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel's Minhag regarding handing white clothes to a laundry?

(b) Is this not like Beis Shamai?

(c) 've'Shavin Eilu ve'Eilu, she'To'anin Koros Beis ha'Bad ve'Igulei ha'Gas'.
What are these two things?

(d) Why do Beis Shamai concede this to Beis Hillel? Why are they not strict here, too?
