REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Previous daf

Shabbos 83

1)

(a) What does Rabah do with the Beraisa, which records the Rabbanan as saying 'Avodah Zarah ke'Sheretz', implying 'but not be'Masa'?

(b) 'Nochri ve'Nochris, Avodah Zarah u'Meshamsheha, Hen ve'Lo Hesetan, Rebbi Akiva Omer, Hen ve'Hesetan'. This Beraisa appears to be a proof for Rebbi Elazar's opinion. What does Hesetan mean in this context?

(c) Why is the Beraisa *not* in fact, a proof for Rebbi Elazar? What is intrinsically wrong with the Beraisa, that forces us to amend it?

(d) Rabbah and Rebbi Elazar each explain the Beraisa to conform with his opinion. According to the initial amendment, with which part of the Beraisa do they agree, and in which point do they disagree?

2)
(a) What problem does the Gemara have with this explanation - from the word 'Hen'?

(b) What is now ...

  1. ... Tum'as Masa?
  2. ... Tum'as Heset?
(c) How do we now interpret ...
  1. ... 'Hen'?
  2. ... 'Hesetan'?
3)
(a) Rav Ashi explains the Beraisa according to Rabah.
How does he explain 'Avodah Zarah ... Hen ve'Lo Hesetan'?

(b) What will be the Din according to both Tana'im by ...

  1. ... 'Nochri ve'Nochris'?
  2. ... Meshamshei Avodah Zarah ?
(c) How will Rav Ashi explain 'Hen ve'Lo Hesetan', according to Rebbi Elazar.

(d) In view of the Pasuk in Tehilim "Ragleihem ve'Lo Yehalechu", how is it possible for Avodah Zarah to be Meisit others - since Meisit incorporates moving, not just bearing the weight.

4)
(a) We learn from Pesukim that the Heset of a Zav is Metamei vessels, Adam, and food and drink.
How do we derive this Limud with regard to vessels, from the Pasuk in Vayikra "u'Kli Cheres Asher Yiga Bo ha'Zav"?

(b) How do we reconcile the Beraisa, which says that there is no Masa by Zav, with the Pasuk by Zav, which includes Masa?

(c) When *does* Masa ha'Zav apply even to vessels?

(d) The Beraisa precludes *everything* from Tum'as Heset, except for a Zav.
Is it therefore correct to say that the author of this Beraisa cannot be Rebbi Akiva, who declares Avodah Zarah to be the same as a Zav?

5)

(a) Rav Chama bar Guri'ah asks 'Avodah Zarah Yehsnah le'Evarim O Einah le'Evarim'?
What is ...
  1. ... the first version of the Sha'aleh?
  2. ... the second version of the Sha'aleh?
(b) What Halachah does the Gemara learn from the Pasuk in Shoftim "va'Yasimu Lahem Ba'al B'ris l'Elohim" - ' Zeh Z'vuv Ba'al Ekron'?

(c) The Gemara concludes that the Sha'aleh whether Avodah Zarah applies to one that is less than a Kezayis or not pertains to the Din of Tum'ah. Why should an Avodah Zarah which is less than a Kezayis, be Metamei - any more than a piece of corpse?

(d) How does the Gemara resolve the Sha'aleh - based on the Pasuk in Melachim "va'Yashlech es Afaro El Kever B'nei ha'Am"?

6)
(a) According to the Rabbanan of Rebbi Akiva, why is the Gemara compared to ...
1. ... Tum'as Sheretz?
2. ... Tum'as Nidah?
3. ... the Tum'as Mes?
(b) They could have learned a Chumra from each Hekesh, instead of a Kula.
Which Chumra would they then have learned from ...
1. ... Sheretz?
2. ... Nidah?
3. ... a Mes?
(c) What made them (go against the principle of 'le'Chumra u'le'Kula, le'Chumra Makshinan' and) Darshen le'Kula, rather than le'Chumra?
7)
(a) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Mishlei "Derech Oni'ah be'Lev Yam"?

(b) Does this Pasuk preclude river-craft?

(c) Chananya makes the same Derashah from the Pasuk written by Sak.
Which Pasuk and what is the Derashah?

(d) What are the two differences between the two Derashos?

8)
(a) What does Rava derive from Chananya concerning the transportation of the boat down to the water?

(b) What did Rav teach, based on the statement of Rebbi Chanina ben Akavya, regarding Chananya's small boat?

(c) What similar Derashah did Rebbi Yonasan make from the Pasuk in Bamidbar "Zos ha'Torah, Adam Ki Yamus be'Ohel"?

(d) How does Resh Lakish Darshen this Pasuk?
