REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Shabbos 91

1)

(a) Why does Shmuel need to tell us that Rebbi Meir (the Tana Kama of our Mishnah) declares even someone who carries out one seed to be Chayav, when he has already given the Shiur of a seed as a Kol she'Hu.

(b) Since our Mishnah renders a person Chayav because of his intention (as we see from 'ha'Matzni'a'), does it follow that if someone has the intention of carrying out his entire household in one go, he will not be Chayav for subsequently carrying it out piece by piece?

(c) Rava tells us that someone who carries out a Kigerogeres to eat, and then, before putting it down, he decides that he wants to sow it, is Chayav. Seeing that he has carried out both the Shiur for eating and for sowing, what is the Chidush?

2)
(a) Rava asked Rav Nachman about someone who is carrying out half a Kigerogeres of seeds, and then, after it has swelled to more than a Kigerogeres, he decides to eat them, willhe be Chayav after putting them down.
What exactly, is Rava's Sha'aleh?

(b) Why might the Din be more lenient in the reverse case: namely, if, whilst he is carriying out a Kigerogeres to eat, the food shrinks and he decides to sow it before placing it? What will the Sha'aleh be then?

(c) Assuming that we rule Lehachmir in the two previous Sha'alos, the Gemara then asks a third Sha'aleh - whether 'Yesh Dichuy le'Inyan Shabbos O Lo'.
What exactly is the third Sha'aleh?

3)
(a) Rava also asked whether someone who throws a Kezayis of Terumah into a Tamei house is Chayav or not. If we learn the Sha'aleh as it stands, it makes no sense, neither as regards Shabbos, nor as regards being Metamei food.
Why not?

(b) The Gemara therefore, establishes the Sha'aleh when there already less than a Kebeitzah of food lying in the house, and the Sha'aleh is whether we say 'Migu' or not. What exactly is the Sha'aleh?

(c) Rav Nachman tried to answer him from a Beraisa (regarding the Shiur of carrying on Shabbos): 'Aba Shaul Omer, Sh'tei ha'Lechem ve'Lechem ha'Panim Shiuran Kigerogeres'.
What is the proof from there?

(d) Why is the proof in fact, not acceptable?

4) Our Mishnah states 'Chazar ve'Hichniso, Eino Chayav Ela ke'Shiuro'.
In light of the principle 'Machshavah Mevatel Machshavah', is that not obvious?

5)

(a) What does our Mishnah say about a case where someone carries out food from the house and places it on the threshold between the Reshus ha'Yachid and the Reshus ha'Rabim; then someone else picks it up and takes it out? Will either of them be Chayav?

(b) What will be the Din if the first person then picks up the food and completes what he began? Will *he* be Chayav?

(c) What does the Mishnah say about someone who carries out a box full of fruit, and places it half in the Reshus ha'Rabim, but half still in the Reshus ha'Yachid?

6)
(a) What kind of threshold must the Mishnah be talking about, and why is that?

(b) What is then the Chidush?

(c) Why can the author of our Mishnah not be Ben Azai?

7)
(a) What makes Chizkiyah establish the box of fruits on our Mishnah by cucumbers and pumpkins? What will be the Din by smaller fruit?

(b) What does Rebbi Yochanan hold in this regard?

(c) Why does the Seifa of our Mishnah, which says 'Ad she'Yotzi es Kol ha'Kupah' - not seem to concur with Chizkiyah?

(d) And why does the Reisha, which says 'Af al Pi she'Rov Peiros mi'ba'Chutz, Patur' - not seem to concur with Rebbi Yochanan?

8)
(a) How does ...
1. ... Chizkiyah ...
2. ... Rebbi Yochanan ...
... amend the Mishnah in a way that concurs with his opinion?

(b) The Beraisa writes 'ha'Motzi Kupas ha'Ruchlin ve'Nasnah Al Askupah ha'Chitzonah, Af al Pi she'Rov Minim ba'Chutz, Patur ad she'Yotzi es Kol ha'Kupah'.
Why is this a Kashya on Chizkiyah?

(c) How does Chizkiyah answer this?

9)
(a) Why is someone who steals a purse on Shabbos, Chayav to pay for the purse - should it get lost, despite the fact that he is Chayav Misah for the Chilul Shabbos?

(b) Why will the Din be different if he drags the purse out of the owner's domain, instead of carrying it?

(c) Why is this latter Din a Kashya on Rebbi Yochanan?

(d) How will Rebbi Yochanan explain the Beraisa?

10)
(a) If someone drags a purse without straps which is full of money from the owner's domain to his own, and places it half in the owner's domain and half in his own, in which case will he acquire the money that is inside his domain, and in which will he not?

(b) With regard to dragging a purse on Shabbos, how will a purse *with* straps be different than one without?

11)
(a) The Gemara concludes that Abaye holds like Chizkiyah ('be'Yad Patur, bi'Kli Chayav'), and Rava, like Rebbi Yochanan ('be'Yad Chayav, bi'Kli Patur'). In view of the Mishnah (2a) 'Pashat Ba'al ha'Bayis es Yado la'Chutz - ... Sheneihem Peturim' - which seems to hold 'Yado Basar Gufo Gereirah', how can Rava say 'be'Yad Chayav'?

(b) Why then, is he Patur in the Mishnah?

(c) And why is he Chayav, when the hand is lower than three Tefachim, according to Rava?
