REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Shabbos 101

1)

(a) Why did Rav Huna forbid one to carry in a small boat which is tapered to a point at its bottom?

(b) Carryin *is* however, permitted there, under one of two conditions. What are they?

2)
(a) The Gemara asks on Rav Huna, why we should not say 'Gud Acheis Mechitzasah'g.
What does this mean?

(b) The Gemara's source for saying this, is a statement by Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Yehudah regarding a cane stuck in the ground in the street, with a basket perched on top.
What does Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Yehudah say there?

(c) The Gemara rejects this proof on the basis of a statement made by Rav that the Chachamim disagree with Rebbi Yossi, and render the thrower Patur.
How does the Gemara go on to prove that we *do* say 'Gud Acheis' etc., from a plank stuck in the ground in the street?

(d) Why then, do the Rabbanan argue with Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Yehudah in the case of the cane with the basket on top?

3)
(a) How can we apply 'Gud Acheis' ... to a boat? Why do we not say that the fish swim past the foot of the boat - just like we say in the case of the cane 'Gedayim Bok'in Bo'?

(b) How does the Gemara prove this from the principle of Mechitzah Teluyah?

4)

(a) Is it not obvious, asks the Gemara, that when two ships are tied together, one may carry from to the other. It attempts to answer 'Lo Shanu Ela Bitzis she'Beinaihu'.
What does this mean?

(b) On what grounds is this answer rejected?

(c) What is the Gemara's final answer?

(d) Does that mean that, if the ships come apart, the Eiruv is broken, and it will no longer be permitted to carry from one to the other until a new Eiruv has been made?

5)
(a) Does the Mechitzah that was put up on Shabbos have the Din of a Mechitzah?

(b) What is the difference between a Mechitzah that was erected on Shabbos on purpose, and one that was put up by mistake?

(c) What is the difference between the technical terms 'Shogegin' and 'Muta'in'?

6)
(a) Shmuel establishes our Mishnah even when the ships were tied with a rope.
Does it make any difference whether the string will hold or not?

(b) Shmuel establishes the Mishnah in Ohalos, which writes 'Kashrah *be'Davar ha'Ma'amidah*, Mevi Lah Tum'ah' ... , by a metal chain. Why does he do that?

(c) Then why does he explain our Mishnah when the ships are tied with a rope?
