REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Previous daf

Shabbos 136

1)

(a) Tana'im in a Beraisa argue about whether Shechitah renders an eighth-month baby animal Tahor or not. On what grounds does the Gemara reject the contention that the Machlokes is based on whether an eighth-month baby is considered a Nefel or not?

(b) Rebbi Elazar and Rebbi Shimon compare an eighth-month baby to a Tereifah. Why does the Tana Kama not agree that it can be compared to a Tereifah?

(c) So why can we not at least compare it to a Tereifah from birth?

2)
(a) Does Raban Shimon ben Gamliel declare *all* babies Safek Nefel?

(b) What are the ramifications of this distinction as regards ...

  1. ... Shechting a new-born calf on Yom-Tov?
  2. ... a Bechor that is born with a blemish?
(c) How do we resolve two Sha'alos in one from a statement made by Shmuel regarding the Din of 'Ha Lo Shahah, Sefeika Havi' of Raban Shimon ben Gamliel?
3)
(a) How does the Gemara initially establish the Machlokes between Raban Shimon ben Gamliel and the Rabbanan, and in which case will they then agree that the baby is not a Nefel?

(b) Why do the Rabbanan say by 'Pihak u'Mes' that the baby is not a Nefel?

(c) The Gemara however, rejects this contention from an episode that took place with Rav Papa and Rav Huna Brei de'Rav Yehoshua, when they were served a seventh-day calf at the house of Rav Idi bar Avin's son. What happened there to force the Gemara to change its mind?

(d) What does the Gemara finally hold? In which case do Raban Shimon ben Gamliel and the Rabbanan agree, and in which case do they argue?

4)
(a) In view of Shmuel's ruling like Raban Shimon ben Gamliel, why did the Amora'im mourn for their respective sons who died within thirty days (particularly considering the tendency to take the lenient view in matters of mourning)?

(b) What is the Din regarding Yibum of a woman whose only baby died within thirty days, if her husband dies too?

(c) Should she get engaged without performing Chalitzah, Ravina quotes Rava, who differentiates between a woman who is now betrothed to a Yisrael or to a Kohen. What is the difference between them?

(d) According to Rav Sheravya quoting Rava, she requires Chalitzah, either way. What was Rav Sheravya's response to Ravina, who told him that, although initially, Rava had indeed ruled like him, he later retracted to say what Ravina had quoted him as saying?

  2. ... "ve'*Im* Nekeivah Hi"?
(b) How do we know that the author of this Beraisa (whose name is not mentioned) is Rebbi Yehudah?

(c) In which 'other' area of Halachah does Rebbi Yehudah consider an Androginus like a woman?
