FOOTNOTES:
==========
(1) The Gemara in Yevamos (74b) derives this from the fact that there are
three verses describing the Taharah process. The first verse teaches that a
person who is Tamei becomes Tahor with *Tevilah* alone, the second verse
teaches that he becomes Tahor with *He'erev Shemesh* (sundown) following the
Tevilah, and the third verse teaches that he becomes Tahor upon bringing his
*Korban* the following day. The Gemara explains that the first verse is
discussing the person's status with regard to Chulin (that is, he becomes
permitted to eat Chulin after Tevilah), the second verse is discussing his
status with regard to Terumah (that is, he becomes permitted to eat Terumah
when the sun sets), and the third verse is discussing his status with regard
to Kodesh (that is, he becomes permitted to eat Kodesh only after he brings
his Korban the next day).
(2) The Gemara in Yevamos (75a) derives this from the fact that the Torah
says that even a *Kli* which is a Tevul Yom is "Tamei Ad ha'Erev" ("Tamei
until the evening"). Since the verse cannot be referring to Tum'ah
associated with an Isur Achilah (since a Kli cannot eat), it must be
teaching that a Kli which is a Tevul Yom will make Terumah (and, all the
more so, Kodesh) Pasul by *touching* it. (This source is cited by Rashi
here, beginning of 29b, and in Shabbos, beginning of 14b. The Gemara in
Yevamos there cites an additional source to teach that a Tevul Yom makes
Terumah Pasul through touch; see also Insights here.)
(3) According to Rashi (end of 29b), we learn this from a Kal v'Chomer from
Mechusar Kipurim: if a Mechusar Kipurim is Mutar to eat Terumah but Asur to
eat Kodesh, then certainly food which touched a Tevul Yom -- which becomes
Pasul if it is Terumah -- will be Posel Kodesh (i.e. it will make a Revi'I
b'Kodesh). See Insights.
(4) This is clear from the Mishnah in Tevul Yom (2:4) and other places.
However, the Pesul of Kodesh which touches a Mechusar Kipurim is only
*mid'Rabanan* and not mid'Oraisa. (This explains why the Gemara does not say
that a Mechusar Kipurim is "*Posel*" Kodesh, but rather that he is "*Pasul*"
for Kodesh mid'Oraisa, meaning that he is prohibited from eating Kodesh.)
See Insights.
(5) This is learned from the verse that says, with regard to a Tanur that
became Tamei from a Sheretz and became a Rishon l'Tum'ah, "Kol Asher b'Socho
Yitma" ("All that is inside of it will become Tamei"); the Tanur which is a
Rishon makes the food inside of it into a Sheni l'Tum'ah. The verse is
discussing all types of food, even Chulin.
(6) According to the Gemara's conclusion, we learn this from a Mah ha'Tzad:
we learn from Tevul Yom of Sheretz and Kli Cheres, both of which are Tamei
and make Terumah Pasul, that a Kikar Sheni, which is also Tamei, makes
Terumah Pasul (and certainly it makes Kodesh Pasul).
(7) Rebbi Yosi (29b) learns this from a Kal v'Chomer from Mechusar Kipurim:
if a Mechusar Kipurim is Mutar to eat Terumah but Asur to eat Kodesh, then
certainly food which is a Shelishi, which is Pasul when it is Terumah, will
make Kodesh that it touches become Pasul (i.e. it will make a Revi'i
b'Kodesh). According to Tosfos (30a, DH Ha), the conclusion of the Gemara is
that we learn this from a Mah ha'Tzad from Mechusar Kipurim and Kli Cheres:
just like Mechusar Kipurim and Kli Cheres, which are Tamei, make Kodesh
Pasul, so, too, a Kikar Shelishi, which is also Tamei (that is, when it is
Terumah it is Pasul and may not be eaten), will make Kodesh Pasul.
