Sukah 22

SUKAH 21-25 - my brother Ari Kornfeld has generously sponsored one month of Dafyomi publications for the benefit of Klal Yisrael

1) [line 1] HA'MEDUVLELES - (a) where the Sechach is thinned (the opinion of Rav); or (b) where the Sechach is disarranged (the opinion of Shmuel)

2) [line 2] HA'ME'UVAH - where the Sechach is piled on thickly
3) [line 4] SUKAH ANIYAH - a Sukah with a minimum amount of Sechach
4) [line 5] KANEH OLEH V'KANEH YORED - a Sukah where alternate planks or poles are placed on different levels, one higher and one lower. Although the Sechach covers the entire Sukah, since the Sechach is placed on different levels, it permits the sun to shine through, and there is more light on the ground than shade

5) [line 5] RAV TANI CHADA, SHMUEL TANI TARTEI - Rav learns that the words in our Mishnah, "Sukah ha'Meduvleles veshe'Tzilasah Merubah me'Chamasah," refer to one case; Shmuel learns that these words refer to two cases

6a) [line 7] MEDULDELES - thinned
b) [line 9] MEVULBELES - disarranged
7) [line 16] CHAVOT RAMI - (lit. press down and lower) consider the upper Sechach to be pressed down, at the height of the lower Sechach

8) [line 19] MA'AZIVAH - a mixture of mud and sand or stone chips, etc., that covers a ceiling

9a) [line 20] V'HEN MECHUVANOS - and the upper beams are located directly above the lower beams
b) [line 23] HAYU HA'ELYONOS K'VEIN HA'TACHTONOS - if the upper beams are located directly above *the spaces* between the lower beams

22b---------------------------------------22b

10) [line 3] HA'MAS'IMOS - that are laying side by side
11) [line 4] ARI'ACH - a brick that is 3 Tefachim long and 1 1/2 Tefachim wide
12) [line 28] K'ZUZA MILE'EIL, K'ISTERA MILE'TACHAS - (a) a hole in the Sechach that is the size of a Zuz, forms sunshine on the ground that is the size of a Sela (which is the Istera, a larger coin) (RASHI, RIF, ROSH, RAN);
(b) a hole in the Sechach that is the size of a Zuz, appears to be only half of a Zuz when looked at from below (Istera can also refer to the coin that is half of a Zuz -- Kidushin 11b) (TOSFOS)

13) [line 31] KOCHVEI CHAMAH - (a) the sparkle of the sun (RASHI); (b) large stars (or planets) that can be seen during the day (RAMBAM, VILNA GA'ON)
