1) [line 1] BEIS SE'ASAYIM - a parcel of land in which two Se'ah of grain is
normally planted, which is the area of the Azarah of the Mishkan, 50 by 100
Amos, approx. 1,152 square meters (12,400 square feet) or 1,659 square
meters (17,856 square feet), depending upon the differing Halachic opinions
2) [line 1] DIRAH SHE'TASHMISHAH L'AVIR (KARPAF)
(a) An enclosed, non-residential area that is larger than a Beis Se'asayim
(see previous entry) is called a "Karpaf Yoser mi'Beis Se'asayim she'Lo
Hukaf l'Dirah." Karpifos are enclosed areas that are located outside of a
settlement, used for storage and other such purposes. Lo Hukaf l'Dirah means
that the enclosure around the Karpaf was not built for residential purposes.
(b) Since it is fully enclosed, any Karpaf is a Reshus ha'Yachid mid'Oraisa.
A person who throws an object into it from Reshus ha'Rabim is Chayav.
However, if it was not enclosed for residential purposes but for storage and
the like, and it is also larger than a Beis Se'asayim, the Chachamim
consider it a Karmelis and prohibit carrying in it more than a distance of
four Amos lest people mistake it for a Reshus ha'Rabim.
(c) The Gemara concludes that if the area enclosed byh a tree's drooping
branches is larger that a Beis Se'asayim, one may not carry objects under it
more than a distance of four Amos, since the area it encloses is not used
for residential purposes. Even if a watchman resides there, and it was
specifically planted for this purpose, it is still not considered to be a
residence since it is a "Dirah she'Tashmishah l'Avir," i.e. a residence the
purpose of which is to service (guard) the open area surrounding it.

6) [line 5] B'NEKA - (O.F. valede - a valley) in a crevice of a rock
(RASHI); (b) in a ditch (ARUCH)
7) [line 7] KAMAH KETZURAH, V'SHIBOLOS MEKIFOS OSAH - stalks of grain that
were cut leaving a clearing, with stalks that were ten Tefachim high left
standing (uncut) at the perimeter
8) [line 8] ALPAYIM AMAH (TECHUM SHABBOS)
(a) A person is only allowed to walk a distance of 2000 Amos, approximately
960 meters (3147 feet) or 1,152 meters (3774 feet), depending upon the
differing Halachic opinions, from his city or dwelling place (if he is not
in a city) on Shabbos or Yom Tov. If he wants to walk another 2000 Amos, he
must make an Eruv Techumin.
(b) This is accomplished by placing an amount of food that would be used for
two meals nearly 2000 Amos away from his present location, in the direction
in which he wishes to walk. The location where his food is placed is
considered his new dwelling or *place of Shevisah* for that Shabbos or Yom
Tov, and he may walk 2000 Amos in any direction from there.
