Yevamos 9

YEVAMOS 6, 7, 8, 9 (Chanukah) - dedicated by Uri Wolfson and Naftali Wilk in honor of Rav Mordechai Rabin of Har Nof, a true beacon of Torah and Chesed.

1) [line 1] AVODAS KOCHAVIM (SE'IREI AVODAS KOCHAVIM)
(a) The Sanhedrin (the Jewish Supreme Court) must bring a Korban if they issued a mistaken ruling permitting an act of idolatry that carries a Chiyuv Kares and the Jewish people in Eretz Yisrael (the majority of the people or the majority of the tribes) conducted themselves based on this ruling. The sages bring a young bull as an Olah and a goat as a Chatas on behalf of each of the tribes. The people are exempt, since they relied on the Beis Din ha'Gadol. The goats are called Se'irei Avodas Kochavim (RAMBAM Hilchos Shegagos 12:1).
(b) The blood of the goats was sprinkled in the Heichal on the Paroches and the Mizbach ha'Zahav. The Sheyarei ha'Dam (the remainder of the blood) was poured on the Western Yesod (foundation) of the Mizbe'ach. The remains of the goats were burned outside of the city of Yerushalayim (Bamidbar 15:22-26).

2) [line 36] MERUBIN B'SAYIF, LEFICHAH MAMONAN AVAD (IR HA'NIDACHAS)
A city that was led astray (Nidach) to the extent that its inhabitants willfully committed idolatry, must be destroyed. All of those who were led astray must be killed and the city burned, along with all of the possessions of its inhabitants, as stated in Devarim 13:13-19. The righteous people who were not led astray are not killed, but their possessions are burned.

3) [line 49] KI'MEDUMAH LI SHE'EIN LO MO'ACH B'KODKODO - it appears to me that he has no brain in his head

4a) [line 53] ISUR MITZVAH - a Rabbinical prohibition, i.e. the relatives one is forbidden to marry mid'Rabanan. According to Tana Kama (Yevamos 20a), they are called "Isur Mitzvah" because it is a Mitzvah to heed the words of the sages.
b) [line 53] ISUR KEDUSHAH - a Torah prohibition, i.e. the women one is forbidden to marry by a Lo Sa'aseh that does not carry the punishment of Kares. For example, a widow to a Kohen Gadol, a divorcee to a Kohen, a Mamzeres or Nesinah to a Yisrael, and a Bas Yisrael to a Nesin or Mamzer. According to Tana Kama (Yevamos 20a), they are called "Isur Kedushah" because of the verse regarding the Kohanim, "Kedoshim Yiheyu" - "They shall be holy" (Vayikra 21:6). (Rebbi Yehudah explains Isur Mitzvah and Isur Kedushah in the exact opposite way -- see ibid.)

9b---------------------------------------9b

5) [line 6] ACHOSAH SHE'HI YEVIMTAH - (lit. a sister who is a sister-in-law) a case of two brothers married to two sisters and one of the sisters is forbidden to a third brother as an Ervah, e.g. a daughter-in-law or mother- in-law, etc. If both married brothers die, the sister of the Ervah is permitted to the third brother [because she is not the sister of his Zekukah].
