Yoma 15

The numbers that appear next to certain entries represent the number assigned to those items in the diagram of the Beis ha'Mikdash of the Tiferes Yisrael (e.g. TY #43). This diagram, which will be included in a separate mailing and can be found on our site, is printed both in the Tiferes Yisrael Mishnayos (in Midos Chapter 2 or following Midos) and in Rav P. Kahati's Mishnayos (page 290, at the beginning of Midos).

1) [line 16] KERATZO - (lit. he cut it) he slaughtered it with the minimum amount required, the majority of the esophagus and windpipe

2) [line 17] U'MEREK ACHER - and a different Kohen finished
*3*) [line 24] TANA B'REISHA HATAVAS SHTEI NEROS, V'HADAR HATAVAS CHAMESH NEROS - why should the Tana refer to the Hatavah of the two *last* lamps of the Menorah (in our Mishnah) *before* discussing the Hatavah of the first five lamps (later, on Daf 25a)?

4) [line 26] OROYEI B'ALMA HU D'KA MORI - [our Mishnah, that mentions the Hatavas Shtei ha'Neros,] is simply teaching the Halachos (and is not specifying the order of the Avodos of Yom ha'Kipurim)

5) [line 33] CHAD D'VEI REBBI YANAI - a student of the Yeshiva of Rebbi Yanai
6a) [line 38] V'LITEN SHTAYIM SHE'HEN ARBA - let him cast the blood on the northeastern corner (on both sides at once) and on the southwestern corner (on both sides at once)
b) [line 38] V'ARBA SHE'HEN ARBA - and let him then smear the blood with his finger on each of the four Keranos (upward projecting corners of the Mizbe'ach)

7) [line 41] PISUK MATANOS B'ALMA HI - he is merely pausing during the application of the blood, breaking it into two separate applications

8) [line 44] K'MATZLIF - like a person who is whipping
9) [line 44] MECHAVEI - demonstrated it
10) [line 44] K'MANGEDANA - (a) like the flogger who administers each blow below the previous one (RASHI); (b) like a flogger who administers the blows with an upraised hand (the first drop of blood was sprinkled with an upraised hand) and lifts the whip for each subsequent blow with his hand pointing downward (the seven drops of blood were cast from a position in which the hand was pointing downward, i.e. backhanded underhand; all drops fell on the same place) (ARUCH Erech Neged II, in the name of REBBI MOSHE HA'DARSHAN MI'NARVONA)

*11*) [line 45] MAI LAV A'PALGEI D'MIZBE'ACH - are we not referring to the middle of the wall of the Mizbe'ach? In which case, (a) it is impossible to be exact, and some blood will necessarily be above the half-way mark and some will be below (RASHI); (b) the first application of blood on the Mizbe'ach ha'Penimi was on its Keranos, which are l'Ma'alah, yet the blood was also applied on the middle of the wall, i.e. l'Matah (TOSFOS)

12) [last line] TIHARA - noon

(They became chilled easily while working barefoot in the open, on cold, marble floors.)

18) [line 23] LISHKAS HA'CHOSAMOS - The Chamber of the Seals, where seals exchangeable for flour and wine for Nesachim were sold. This is also the chamber where the Hasmoneans hid away the stones of the Mizbe'ach which were defiled by the Greeks.

19) [line 24] LISHKAS BEIS HA'MOKED - The Chamber of the Hearth. It was given this name because it was the chamber that served the people in the Beis ha'Moked (VILNA GA'ON). From it, a winding stairwell led to an underground passage, which ended in a Mikvah and restrooms. (According to the Tiferes Yisrael, a fire was lit there in the morning for the Kohanim who became Tamei during the night and immersed in the Mikvah before dawn.)

20) [line 25] LISHKAH SHE'OSIN BAH LECHEM HA'PANIM - The Chamber of the Bakers of the Lechem ha'Panim, where the family of the house of Garmo baked the Lechem ha'Panim (Shekalim 11b, 14a).
