Yoma 31

YOMA 31 - Dedicated to the memory of Moshe Simcha ben Dovid Z"L Rubner by his parents, Dovid and Zahava Rubner of Petach Tikva.

1) THE ENTRY IMMERSION (cont'd)

(a) Question: Would a Chatzitzah invalidate this immersion even according to R. Yehudah?
(b) Answer: As by a D'Oreisa, so, too, a D'Rabanan.
(c) Question: Would partial entry constitute entry to necessitate this Tevilah?
(d) Answer: The Metzora teaches that it is.
(e) Question: Could one bypass this Tevilah by using a long knife for Shechitah?
1. The question is relevant to the position of Ben Zoma (is the obligation even for one outside).
2. It is also relevant to the Rabanan who argue with R. Yehudah (do we exempt only one not doing an Avodah).
(f) Answer: Teiku
2) THE FIVE TEVILOS AND TEN KIDUSHIN
(a) Abaye learned from a Beraisa that Ein Eitam was 23 Amos higher than the floor of the Azarah (the 20 Amos of the gate plus the calculated three Amos height of a Mikvah).
31b---------------------------------------31b

(b) Question: But what of the additional Amos for the thickness of the roof of the gate and the Ma'azivah?
(c) Answer: Marble may be very thin.
(d) Question: Still, the height must be a bit more than 23 Amos?
(e) Answer: We do not consider fractional Amos.
3) THE PARTITION OF LINEN
(a) Question: Why linen?
(b) Answer: To remind the Kohen Gadol that the day's Avodah is done in linen (as explained regarding the upcoming Mishnah).
4) MISHNAH: THE PROCEDURE OF THE TAMID
(a) The Kohen Gadol disrobed, immersed, emerged and dried himself, after which he donned the Bigdei Zahav which were brought to him and he performed Kidush Yadayim and Raglayim.
(b) He began the Shechitah of the Tamid, which another Kohen took over while the Kohen Gadol did Kabalas HaDam.
(c) He went into the Heichal to offer the Ketores, prepare the Neiros, be Makriv the Rosh, Eivarim, Minchas Chavitin and Yayin.
(d) At Shacharis the Ketores came between the Zerikah and the Haktaras Eivarim, while Bein HaArbayim it came between the Eivarim and the Nesachim.
(e) If the Kohen was sensitive then pre-heated water would be added to the Mikvah.
5) R. MEIR AND THE RABANAN ON THE FIRST SET OF KIDUSHIN
(a) Question: Our Mishnah, which only lists one Kidush, must argue with R. Meir who holds that two Kidushin are required for donning the new set of Begadim.
(b) Answer (R. Papa): No, both the Rabanan and R. Meir agree that one Kidush is for disrobing and one is for donning; they only argue about the application of the Pasuk which connects disrobing to donning.
(c) Question: But the Beraisa teaches that, according to R. Meir, there were two Kidushin for the first Tevilah!?
(d) Answer (R. Papa): If it is explicit in the Beraisa, then it must be, indeed, that R. Meir argues with our Mishnah!
