prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Previous daf

Yoma 18

1)

(a) How would the elders of Beis-Din address the Kohen Gadol?

(b) What would they read to him during the seven days of Hafrashah?

(c) They made him read the Parshah, too.
What reason did they give him for doing that?

2)
(a) What change in the procedure did they introduce on Erev Yom Kipur?

(b) Why did they withhold food from him on Erev Yom Kipur?

3)
(a) We learn from the Pasuk in Emor "ve'ha'Kohen ha'Gadol me'Echav" that the Kohen Gadol should be superior to the other Kohanim in four areas.
Which areas?

(b) What does Acheirim learn from "ha'Gadol me'Echav"?

(c) How do we reconcile the above Derashah (that the Kohen must be superior to the other Kohanim in wisdom) with our Mishnah, where the elders of Beis- Din would say to the Kohen Gadol 'Perhaps you never learnt'?

(d) Why did Marsa bas Baytus give two Sa'ah of Dinrim to King Yanai?

4)
(a) According to the Tana of our Mishnah, they would pass bulls, rams and lambs before the Kohen Gadol.
Why did our Tana not include *goats*, like the Tana of the Beraisa did?

(b) Then why did they pass *bulls* before him, since the bull on Yom Kipur, comes to atone for the sins of his fellow Kohanim - with similar results?

(c) What good advice do we learn from here?

5)
(a) According to some Tana'im, during the seven days of Hafrashah they would feed the Kohen Gadol food made of flour, and eggs.
Why?

(b) And what is the reason of those Tana'im who object to this practice?

(c) According to Sumchus quoting Rebbi Meir, they would not feed him 'Abi'.
What does 'Abi' stand for?

(d) Some add white-wine to the list, others add a second 'Beis' ('Ab*v*i'). What does the second Beis stand for?

6)
(a) The Beraisa says 'Zav Tolin Lo be'Ma'achal, be'Chol Minei Ma'achal'. What does this mean?

(b) According to Rebbi Yehudah ben Beseira, during the days of examination, a Zav should refrain from eating 'Chagbi' and 'Gavam'.
If Chagbi stands for (*Ch*alav, *G*evinah, *B*eitzim, and *Y*ayin) milk, cheese, eggs and wine, what is Gavam?

(c) 've'Lo Kol Devarim ha'Mevi'in Liyedei Tum'ah' comes to includes four more things.
What are they?

7)

(a) Why is Gargir referred to in Melachim as 'Oros'?

(b) What does Rav Huna say about white mustard?

(c) Rav Papa points out that this applies only to Gargir Metzarna'ah.
What is Gargir Metzarna'ah?

8) Rav advises a guest neither to eat eggs, nor to cover oneself at night-time with a garment that his host will wear during the day.
Why not?

9)

(a) When Rav and Rav Nachman traveled, they would marry a woman for the one day that they spent in that town.
What was the point in doing this?

(b) What is the problem with that from a statement by Rebbi Eliezer ben Ya'akov? What did Rebbi Eliezer ben Ya'akov say?

(c) On what grounds do we reject the Gemara's initial answer (that Rebbi Eliezer ben Ya'akov does not refer to Talmidei-Chachamim, whose children were well-known)?

(d) The Gemara then answers that they would send a Sheliach seven days in advance to find them a short-term wife.
What is the *second* answer? How does this answer the first Kashya (in a.), too?

10)
(a) The elders of Beis-Din then handed the Kohen Gadol over to the elders of the Kehunah.
What for?

(b) What did they make him swear?

(c) If he was a Talmid-Chacham, he would spend the night Darshening (lecturing in Halachah).
What would they do if he was unable to Darshen ...

  1. ... but was sufficiently well-versed to understand Derashos?
  2. ... nor was he sufficiently well-versed to understand Derashos?
(d) If he was not even capable of reading T'nach, they would read to him from Iyov, Ezra and Divrei Hayamim.
What did Zecharyah ben Kevutal testify?
