Yoma 44

YOMA 44 (1 Adar 5759) - dedicated by my mother on the Yahrzeit of my father's father, Mordecai [ben Elimelech Shmuel] Kornfeld, who perished in the Holocaust along with most of his family. May the deaths of the Kedoshim of the Holocaust atone for Klal Yisrael like Korbanos.

1)

(a) The Torah writes in Acharei-Mos "ve'Chol Adam Lo Yihye be'Ohel Mo'ed ... be'Vo'o Lechaper ba'Kodesh".
What do we learn (with regard to location) from ...
  1. .... "be'Ohel Mo'ed"?
  2. ... "ba'Kodesh"?
(b) And what do we learn (with regard to the time) from ...
  1. ... "be'Vo'o Lechaper"?
  2. ... "Ad Tzeiso"?
(c) And what do we learn from the order of the Pasuk "ve'Chiper Ba'ado, u've'Ad Beiso, u've'Ad Kol Kehal Adas Yisrael"?
2)
(a) The Beraisa requires "be'Vo'o Lechaper" to include the Matan Damim in the prohibition.
Why would we otherwise have thought that the prohibition is restricted to the Ketores?

(b) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Korach "Vayiten es ha'Ketores Vayechaper al ha'Am".

(c) Why does the Ketores atone specifically for the sin of Lashon ha'Ra?

(d) When did they vacate only the Heichal, and when was it necessary to vacate even Bein ha'Ulam ve'la'Mizbe'ach?

3)
(a) On *three* occasions (besides that of the bull and the goat of Yom Kipur) the blood of the Korban was sprinkled towards the Paroches. One of them was the bull of the Kohen Gadol's Chatas (which, like the Chata'os of Yom Kipur, was also sprinkled on the Mizbe'ach ha'Ketores).
Which were the other *two*?

(b) Rebbi Yossi in a Beraisa differentiates between the Avodah of Haktarah and the other Avodos, with regard to vacating even the area of Bein ha'Ulam ve'la'Mizbe'ach. How do we initially interpret 'Haktarah' and why is this a Kashya on what we just learned above (in 2d)?

(c) We answer that Haktarah refers to that of the Heichal (and not of the Kodesh Kodshim).
Why does this create a problem with the continuation of the Beraisa (which explains the advantage of the Heichal over the Bein ha'Ulam ve'la'Mizbe'ach as being that one must vacate the Heichal even during the Avodos that are not Haktarah? Which Avodos does the Gemara think the Tana refers to here?

(d) How do we explain the Beraisa to answer this Kashya? What *does* Haktarah mean?

4) Why does Rebbi Yossi then differentiate between the Haktarah of the Heichal and that of the Kodesh Kodshim, and not between the other Avodos (i.e. the Matan Damim) of the Heichal and those of the Kodesh Kodshim?

Answers to questions

44b---------------------------------------44b

5) From where do we learn that the Heichal must be vacated by the Par Kohen Mashi'ach, the Par He'elam Davar, and the Se'eirei Avodas Kochavim (even though the Halachah of vacating it is mentioned only by the Avodah on Yom Kipur)?

6)

(a) The Mishnah in Keilim divides Eretz Yisrael into ten levels of Kedushah - the last five being: the Ezras Yisrael, the Ezras Kohanim, between the Ulam and the Mizbe'ach, the Heichal and the Kodesh Kodshim (Note: the Ulam itself will be discussed shortly).
How do we try to prove from the fact that Chazal decreed that Bein ha'Ulam ve'la'Mizbe'ach must be vacated, that these ten levels must be mi'd'Oraysa?

(b) How is this contention repudiated?

(c) Then how do we try to prove from the same decree that the Kedushah of the Ulam and that of the Heichal must be one and the same?

(d) On what grounds do we repudiate that contention?

7)
(a) Why did they make the fire-pan for the daily Ketores out of silver and not out of gold?

(b) Then why did they not do the same with the fire-pan of Yom Kipur? (c) What did they do with the Kav of coals which must have spilt on to the floor when (during the year) the Kohen poured the four Kabin of coals from the silver pan into the golden one of three Kabin?

(d) According to Rebbi Yossi in our Mishnah (who says that the Kohen Gadol poured from a pan holding a Sa'ah into one of three Kabin, *three* Kabin will have spilled. According to Rav Chisda, the author of the Beraisa, which speaks about *two* Kabin spilling, is Rebbi Yishmael Be'no shel Rebbi Yochanan ben Berokah.
What does *he* say?

8) Rav Ashi establishes that opinion even like Rebbi Yossi.
How is this possible?

9)

(a) What made the pan of Yom Kipur lighter than that of the whole year?

(b) Why did the Yom Kipur pan have a longer handle?

(c) What did the Yom Kipur fire-pan have that the other pans did not - according to ben ha'S'gan?

10)
(a) There are seven kinds of gold: What do we learn from the Pasuk in Bereishis "u'Zehav ha'Aretz Hahi Tov"?

(b) What is ...

  1. ... Zahav Ofir?
  2. ... Zahav Mufaz?
  3. ... Zahav Shachut?
(c) What is ...
  1. ... Zahav Sagur?
  2. ... Zahav Parvayim?
(d) In view of the above, how does Rav Ashi lists only *five*?
