Zevachim 33

The numbers that appear next to certain entries represent the number assigned to those items in the diagram of the Beis ha'Mikdash of the Tiferes Yisrael (e.g. TY #43). This diagram, which will be included in a separate mailing and can be found on our site, is printed both in the Tiferes Yisrael Mishnayos (in Midos Chapter 2 or following Midos) and in Rav P. Kahati's Mishnayos (page 290, at the beginning of Midos).

1) [line 2] LEIMA MESAYEI'A LEI - Let us say that the following Tosefta (Nega'im 8:10) will assist Ula, since it validates his opinion of "Bi'ah b'Miktzas Shemah Bi'ah"

2) [line 2] KOL HA'SEMICHOS SHE'HAYU SHAM - all of the action of "Semichah," the Mitzvah for a person to press his hands with all his might on the head of his animal sacrifice (and not a bird sacrifice) before it is slaughtered, as described in Vayikra (1:4), that were there (in the courtyard of the Azarah)

3) [line 3] KOREI ANI ALEIHEN TEKEF LI'SEMICHAH SHECHITAH - I apply to it (lit. I call it) the Halachah of Tekef li'Semichah Shechitah, the animal has to be slaughtered immediately after the Semichah

4) [line 4] CHUTZ MI'ZU SHE'HAYESAH B'SHA'AR NIKANOR - except for this one, which was performed in Sha'ar Nikanor, (TY #18) the eastern gate of the Azarah, named for the man who donated the brass doors of the gate (see Yoma 38a). It served as the entrance to the Azarah from the Ezras Nashim courtyard (TY #10). Although all the other gates of the Azarah had the Kedushah of the Azarah, Sha'arei Nikanor only had the Kedushah of Har ha'Bayis (for a more in-depth analysis of the ten designated holy areas around the Beis ha'Mikdash, see RAMBAM Hilchos Beis ha'Bechirah 7:13-23). The Chachamim arranged this so that the cured Metzora could stick his head, right hand and right foot into the Azarah while standing under the archway of the gate. (The purpose was to offer him protection from the sun and the rain, as opposed to making him stand outside, in the Ezras Nashim and stick his head, etc. under the archway of the gate -- Tosfos to Yevamos 7b DH Zeh, citing Rabeinu Tam)

5) [line 4] SHE'EIN METZORA YACHOL LIKANES L'SHAM - for a Metzora cannot enter there (the Azarah, before he brings the Korbanos that complete his Taharah process)

6) [line 5] AD SHE'MAZIN ALAV MI'DAM CHATASO UMI'DAM ASHAMO - until the blood of his Korbenos Chatas and Asham is sprinkled on the Mizbe'ach on his behalf (RASHI; the words of the Tosefta, "Chataso... Ashamo" are not in the order that the Korbanos are offered. Rather, the Asham is offered first and then the Chatas -- see Tosefta to Nega'im 8:11 and the Zer Zahav u'Minchas Bikurim there.)

7) [line 9] (MERCHAK) [MERUCHAK] TZAFON - "Tzafon," [- "North," the area that is fit to slaughter Kodshei Kodashim,] is far [from the eastern boundary of the Azarah (which is the farthest the Metzora can walk before his Korbanos are offered)]

8) [line 9] V'LI'AVAD PISHPESH - Perhaps a small door or gate could be built [in the northern wall of the Azarah, in which the Metzora could stand and perform Semichah on his Korban Asham]

9) [line 10] "HA'KOL BI'CHSAV MI'YAD HASH-M ALAI HISKIL; KOL MAL'ACHOS HA'TAVNIS." - "All of this is in writing by the hand of HaSh-m, Who gave me understanding to know, all the works of these plans." (Divrei ha'Yamim I 28:19) - King David informed Shlomo that the plans for the Beis ha'Mikdash were divinely inspired.

10) [line 17] SHEMA YARBEH BI'PESI'OS - lest he take extra steps [inward while he is in the Azarah, which would incur the Kares punishment]

11) [line 5] "... B'CHOL KODESH LO SIGA [V'EL HA'MIKDASH LO SAVO...]" - "... she (a woman after childbirth, who is in a state of Tum'ah) shall neither touch any consecrated thing [nor enter the Mikdash...]" (Vayikra 12:4)

12) [line 8] OCHEL BESAR KODESH (TUM'AS HA'GUF)
(a) Regarding a *person* who becomes Tamei the verse states, "b'Chol Kodesh Lo Siga," (Vayikra 12:4) from which we learn that it is forbidden for a person who is Tamei to *eat* Kodshim.
(b) The punishment for transgressing this Lav intentionally is Kares. If one transgresses it unintentionally he must bring a Korban Oleh v'Yored (SEFER HA'CHINUCH Mitzvah #167). If a person who is Tamei eats the blood of Kodshim, he does not transgress this prohibition.
(c) This is not to be confused with Tum'as Basar (see Background to Shevuos 2:14), which is also called Tamei. Tum'as Basar means that the *Kodshim*, as opposed to the person eating it or offering it, became Tamei.

13) [line 11] ASYA TUM'ASO TUM'ASO - it is learned through a Gezeirah Shavah using the two words "Tum'aso" in the following two verses: (a) "Veha'Nefesh Asher Tochal Basar mi'Zevach ha'Shelamim Asher la'HaSh-m *v'Tum'aso* Alav... v'Nichresa..." - "And the person who shall eat from the Korban Shelamim that is to HaSh-m at the time that the state of Tum'ah shall be upon him... he shall receive the Kares punishment..." (Vayikra 7:20); (b) "Kol ha'Noge'a b'Mes... v'Lo Yis'chata, Es Mishkan HaSh-m Timei... v'Nichresa ha'Nefesh ha'Hi... Od *Tum'aso* Vo." - "And anyone who touches a dead body... and does not have the Mei Chatas (water with the ashes of the Parah Adumah) sprinkled upon him, he defiles the sanctuary of HaSh-m [when he enters it]... that person shall receive the Kares punishment... for his state of Tum'ah is still upon him." (Bamidbar 19:13)

14a) [line 12] MAH L'HALAN ANASH V'HIZHIR - just as in that Halachah (Bi'as Mikdash b'Tum'ah, Bamidbar 19:13) there is a punishment and a prohibition (the prohibition is written in another verse, Bamidbar 5:3),
b) [line 13] AF KAN ANASH V'HIZHIR - so, too, in this Halachah (Ochel Basar Kodesh b'Tum'ah, Vayikra 7:20), there is a punishment and a prohibition (that is learned through the Gezeirah Shavah)

15) [line 15] AZHARAH L'OCHEL MID'ISKASH KODESH L'MIKDASH - the prohibition against eating [meat of the sacrifices b'Tum'ah] is learned from the fact that Kodesh is linked to Mikdash in the verse (Vayikra 12:4; see above, entry #11)
