The Application of Chochmah.

from Tomer Devorah by Rabbi Moshe Cordovero, zt"l

In his famous work, Tomer Devorah, Rabbi Moshe Cordovero, zt"l, enumerates the different Middos which Hakodosh Baruch Hu utilises in His relationship with us, and tells us how to emulate them. (This is in keeping with the Mitzvah of v'halachta b'drachav . Chazal tell us that this Mitzvah implies imitating the Middos of Hashem.) We present selections from the chapter on Chochmah.

It is fitting for humans that they make their wisdom available to all, teaching others how to be successful, instructing each recipient according to his capacity to receive. One should supply as much as one is capable of supplying of one's wisdom, allowing nothing to distract one from this aim.

Heavenly Chochmah has two aspects. The higher aspect looks up ... only receiving from above. The lower aspect looks down ...

The human, too, should develop two aspects. The first aspect should be engaged in contemplating one's Maker, in order to increase and develop one's wisdom. The second aspect should be engaged in instructing others from the wisdom granted to one by Him. In the same way that the heavenly Chochmah influences the lower Middos in varying degrees, depending on the capacity and need of each individual Middoh, so too should one instruct each person according to the capacity of the recipient's intelligence and to the level fitting his needs. One should beware of giving more than the recipient is capable of receiving, so that no problems arise.

... one should take an interest in the needs of His people in order to help them. One's thoughts should be directed to gathering in those who have wandered away and to have good intentions towards them. As one's intelligence thinks for the benefit of the whole of oneself, so one should think for the benefit of others. One should work out schemes which are beneficial to the interests of G-d and of His people, both groups and individuals. One should attempt to lead back anyone who is seen to have deviated from the correct path, acting as the other person's surrogate intelligence and setting that person in the right direction. This is in imitation of the Heavenly Intelligence.

Furthermore, Chochmah gives life to all, as it is written, (Koheles, 7, 12) "Wisdom gives life...". So too should we guide everyone towards life, life in this world and life in the next. In principle, we should be a source of life to all.

Chochmah is the parent of all existence, (koolam bechochmah asita). So too should one be a parent to all of G-d's creatures, specially to Yisrael, the holy souls..., and one should always seek mercy and blessing for everything in the world, in the way that the Heavenly Father has mercy on all creatures. One should always pray for the well-being of all who are in trouble and pain as if they were one's own children. So is the will of G-d!
