Parashat DevarimDevarim 1:16And I commanded your judges at that time saying: Hear between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother and his neighbor.
RASHIAnd I commanded your judges: Rashi: I said to them: Be deliberate in judgment, if a case comes before you once, twice and a third time, don't say: 'This type of case already came before me many times, rather discuss it [at length]. What would you ask on this comment? Your Question:
QUESTIONING RASHIA Question: Why doesn't Rashi accept the simple meaning as the verse goes on to say: He commanded the judges to listen to brothers who have a case between them? Your Answer:
WHAT IS BOTHERING RASHI?A Question: Why the need for the words " Hear between your brothers" ? They seem redundant. It could have simply "And I commanded your judges saying: Judge righteously between a man and his brother.." So the words "Hear between your brothers" seem unnecessary. How does Rashi's comment deal with this? Your Answer:
UNDERSTANDING RASHIAn Answer: The word "Hear" (meaning listen) adds another dimension to the command, as if to imply "listen carefully."
A DEEPER UNDERSTANDINGNote the Hebrew word is щоет in the infinitive (as Rashi points out in his next comment), its meaning is "ongoing hearing" this conveys the idea of intense listening not casual listening.
