RASHI

But Hashem has not given to you a heart to know: Rashi: to recognize the chesed of The Holy One Blessed be He and to cleave to him. Seeing the previous verses what would you ask on Rashi?

QUESTIONING RASHI

A Question: The previous verses said:

1) You have seen all that Hashem did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land.

2) The great trials which your eyes have seen - those great signs and wonders.

Considering that the verses speak of the miracles which they saw, why didn't Rashi say simply "to recognize the miracles" Why does he mention chesed instead ?

Your Answer:

WHAT IS BOTHERING RASHI ?

An Answer: We can't say they didn't recognize the miracles. It had said in Shemos (14:31) that "And Israel saw the strong hand and they believed in Hashem and Moses His servant." So they certainly did see and were impressed by what they saw. So what does Moses mean here? Your Answer:

UNDERSTANDING RASHI

An Answer: Our verse says they had no "heart to know". Heart means a deeper knowledge, what we would call understanding. They did not understand the significance of all those miracles. The miracles were not done to impress they were done for Israel to save the next verse strengthens the idea of chesed here.

It says:

"And I took you forty years in the Wilderness, your clothes were not worn out on you, nor your shoes were not worn out on your feet, Bread you did not eat, nor wine did you drink - in order that you shall know that I am Hashem, your G-d."

This is the chesed which Hashem gave them so that they should know He is their protecting G-d.
