Eikev

"And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates" (Devarim 11:20).

There are many amazing stories about people being saved from harm by the power of the mezuzah which watches over the house and protects it. Here is another one; recorded in Tuvecha Yabiu by Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein shlita.

Dr. Orlin is the head of the blood banks in the Ma'ayinei Hayeshua hospital in Bnei Brak and HaSharon Hospital in Petach Tikvah. He used to live in California and has lots of friends there; some religious Jews and some non. A few years ago, he decided to visit his old habitat and wanted to bring presents to three senior doctors who were his very close friends. What could be a more apropos present to bring from Israel, he thought, than a mezuzah written meticulously? He spent a lot of money to purchase three very kosher mezuzahs in beautiful silver cases.

Upon arriving in CA, the first item on his long list of things to do was to deliver the three gifts. All three doctors had no mezuzahs on their homes, yet they reacted differently. The first scorned at the religious item and refused to accept it; saying that he had no use for presents of this sort. The second accepted the gift, and thanked his friend warmly, but politely refused to affix it to his doorpost. The third doctor received the gift appreciatively, kissed it affectionately, and immediately placed it upon his doorpost while reciting the proper blessing.

Two weeks later, California was hit by the strongest hurricane to hit the West Coast in the history of the USA. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed and tens of thousands of people were left with no roof over their heads.

And then, the most amazing thing happened.

The three doctors live right next to each other; with not that much space between their houses. Yet, the doctor who refused to accept the mezuzah lost his house completely. His beautiful villa was totally destroyed.

The second doctor's house sustained some major damage but nothing near the extent of the first one.

The third doctor's home was miraculously unscarred. The rescue teams that arrived could not believe their eyes. It was as if the winds had just passed over this house after seriously damaging the other ones.

And all because of one little mezuzah.
