CHASIDIC INSIGHTS PARSHAS KI SOVO 5764 BS"D

Ch. 26, v. 1: "V'hoyoh ki sovo el ho'oretz" - "V'hoyoh" is an expression of joy. Only when one comes to the Holy Land can his joy be complete, as the verse in T'hilim 126:2 says, "Oz yimo'lei s'choke pinu." (Ohr Hachaim Hakodosh)

Ch. 26, v. 5: "Arami oveid ovi" - If one is a charlatan, a "ramo'i," he loses "z'chus ovos." (Chidushei HoRi"m)

Ch. 26, v. 6: "Va'yorei'u osonu haMitzrim" - The Egyptians turned us into bad people through our learning from them, as per the verse in T'hilim 106:35, "Va'yis'orvu vagoyim va'y'lamdu maa'seihem." (Imrei Shefer in the name of Maa'sei Hashem)

Ch. 26, v. 11: "V'somachto v'chol hatov" - You shall rejoice in the Torah which is called TOV (Pirkei Ovos 6:3). (Ohr Hachaim Hakodosh)

Ch. 27, v. 4: "V'sadto osom basid" - Just as a cistern is lined with cement to retain every precious drop of wine that is stored there, so too, one should put in every effort to retain every precious bit of Torah knowledge that he has amassed. (Chasam Sofer)

Ch. 27, v. 9: "Haskeis" - Rashi says that the translation is as we find in Targum, "atzeis," listen. Sforno says that it means "envision," as in "sakose mal'k'chem" (Omose 5:26). We can learn from this that to properly hear requires preparation of envisioning in one's mind that upon which he plans to embark. (Shem miShmuel)

The first letters of "Haskeis Ushma Yisroel Ha'yom" create the Holy four-letter name of Hashem and is the "tziruf" for the month of Menachem-Ov. Since it is the beginning of the period set aside for introspection and preparation for the upcoming days of judgment, it is a most appropriate verse for this month. (Nirreh li)

Ch. 28, v. 2: "U'vo'u o'lecho kol habrochos ho'eileh v'hisigucho ki sishma b'kole Hashem Elokecho" - The verse is discussing the righteous person. Why must the blessings "run after him," as indicated by "v'hisigucho," and they will catch up with you? This is because the righteous person is reluctant to receive worldly blessings. They stand in the way of spiritual growth. If so, why doesn't Hashem do the bidding of this person? It is because "ki sishma b'kole Hashem Elokecho." Hashem sends the blessings to a person whom He knows that even after the blessings reach him, will still continue to hearken to Hashem's voice, "ki sishma b'kole Hashem Elokecho." (Degel Machaneh Efrayim)

Ch. 28, v. 8: "Y'tzav Hashem itcho es habrochoh baaso'mecho uvchole mishlach yo'decho" - Not only will there be blessing in the produce you have in storage, which you keep for your household, but even in "mishlach yo'decho," that which you give the poor man, as in "v'yo'deho SHILCHOH lo'evyone" (Mishlei 31:19). (Shaar Bas Rabim)

Ch. 28, v. 11: "V'hosircho Hashem l'tovoh bifri vit'n'cho" - When a person has accomplished his personal mission on earth his life should come to an end. However, if he is needed to influence others positively, his life will be extended. (Rambam in a letter to his son) Hashem will leave you over for good, i.e. extend your life, "bifri vit'n'cho," in the merit of your offspring, to teach them. (Chasam Sofer)
