There was once a man who found a great treasure. He filled his hands with gold and silver, pearls and precious tones. The treasure was so great, however, that it was impossible for him to carry it all home. He was upset that he had to leave so much behind. Even though he could return a second time, he feared that in the interim, others would come and take what remained. What a mixed joy this person has: the joy of suddenly becoming rich, and the pain of leaving so much behind. About this, King David said: "I rejoice over Your words, like one who has found great treasure" (Psalms 119). A person who studies Torah in order to learn its secrets and to understand the depths of the halacha, soon realizes that he can never grasp more than the smallest portion of what exists. Even as he rejoices over the great treasure G-d has brought him, he despairs that he cannot take hold of more. --The Baal Shem Tov
