Deeds of our Fathers

Each person must say, "When will my deeds equal those of my forefathers?" For every true descendent of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob can attain such a level. In the depths of his soul, bound to the living G-d, lies a core of truth. Although it takes effort to touch this root, and without Divine assistance it would be unattainable, nonetheless, G-d will help one realize it.

However, what is in a person's power is to long for this goal. For this is the whole person -- to yearn for G-d with one's entire heart and soul, for according to the intensity of his longing, will be G-d's longing for him, as it says, "As your heart is to your beloved, so is your beloved's heart to you" (Sifri, Devorim 27), and G-d is your shadow" (Psalms 121:5), i.e. He reflects us like a shadow. Through this, each person can fulfill his longing according to his level. G-d will help him achieve his true purpose in life, which is to be His "planting of beauty" (Isaiah 60:31), the seed of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

One's deeds can equal those of his forefathers, for the root of his soul was included in theirs. Then, as a member of the entire Jewish People, it will be said of him as well, "Israel, in whom I am glorified."
