How to Serve the Almighty

Each person must say, "When will my deeds equal those of my forefathers?" For every true descendent of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob can achieve such a level. In the depths of one's soul, bound to the living G-d, lies a core of truth. And though it takes much effort to touch this root (and without Divine assistance it would be unattainable) nevertheless, G-d will help one realize it.

However, what is fully in a person's power is to long for this goal. For this is the whole person -- to yearn for G-d with all ones entire heart and soul. And according to the intensity of ones longing, will be G-d's longing in return. As it says, "As your heart is to your beloved, so your beloved one's heart is to you" (Midrash Sifri, Devorim 27), and "G-d is your shadow" (Psalms 121:5) -- that is, He reflects us like a shadow. Through this, each person can achieve his longing according to his level. G-d will help him achieve his true purpose in life, which is to be His "planting of beauty" (Isaiah 60:31) -- the offspring of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

One's deeds can equal those of his forefathers, for the root of one's soul was included in theirs. Then, as a member of the entire Jewish People, it will be said of him as well -- "Israel, in whom I am glorified."

"And Yehudah drew near to him . . ." (Genesis 44:18).

He drew near to himself.

"Abraham was one" (Ezekiel 33:24).

Abraham served G-d only because he was one. He thought of himself as alone in the world, and didn't pay attention to other people at all, who turned away from G-d, or tried to stop him.

It is impossible for a person to begin the service of G-d unless he considers himself alone in the world, and does not pay heed to anyone who tries to impede him.
