REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Beitzah 35

1)

(a) May one dip olives in salt and still eat them without having to separate Ma'asros? Does salting fix for Ma'asros?

(b) If one takes ten olives from a Ma'atan, the Tana Kama in a Mishnah in Ma'asros obligates separating Ma'asros.
What is a Ma'atan?

(c) Rebbi Eliezer makes a distinction between a Tahor Ma'atan and a Tamei one.
What does he say?

(d) How about the person? Is he Tahor or Tamei?

2)
(a) We just explained at the end of the previous Amud, that, according to Rebbi Eliezer in *our* Mishnah, it is verbal designation that fixes figs for Ma'asros (and not just Shabbos). What Kashya can we ask from the opinion of Rebbi Eliezer himself, from the Mishnah in Ma'asros that we just discussed (in the previous question)?

(b) How do we initially establish our Mishnah to answer this question (proving our rebuttal of Mar Zutra's proof for his fatherto be correct)?

(c) Why is this explanation unacceptable? What is inherently wrong with it?

(d) Rav Shimi bar Ashi refutes Mar'Zutra Brei de'Rav Nachman's proof from our Mishnah by pointing out that the author is Rebbi Eliezer.
How does he do this by quoting Rebbi Eliezer in yet another Mishnah in Ma'asros with regard to Terumah fixing)? What 'Kal va'Chomer' does he make?

3)
(a) We try to prove from the Seifa of our Mishnah, where the Rabbanan permit the fruit in the Muktzah in the Sh'mitah-year at least, when one designates specifically and says 'mi'Ka'an ve'Ad Ka'an'.
How do we resolve Rava's She'eilah from here?

(b) On what grounds do we refute that proof, too?

(c) In a Mishnah in Terumos, Rebbi Eliezer holds that if someone enters a Chatzer eating a cluster of grapes, he may continue to do so.
What does he say about someone who is eating a cluster of grapes when Shabbos enters?

(d) We reconcile this statement with his earlier one that Shabbos *does* fix for Ma'asros by establishing *this* Mishnah according to Rebbi Nasan.
What does Rebbi Nasan say? How does this differ from what we learned earlier (that fruit that children put away for Shabbos, is forbidden to eat without separating Ma'asros, even on Motza'ei Shabbos)?

4)
(a) Rebbi Yehoshua, in the Mishnah in Terumos, holds that if someone enters a courtyard eating a cluster of grapes, he must stop eating until he has Ma'asered them.
Why is that?

(b) What does he hold with regard to eating from the a cluster of grapes when he had to stop with the entry of Shabbos?

5)
(a) When Ravin came from Eretz Yisrael, he quoted Rebbi Yochanan as saying that Shabbos, Terumah, Chatzer, Terumah and Mekach, all have the same Din regarding fixing for Ma'asros.
What is that Din?

(b) He said this with regard to Shabbos, in order to preclude from Hillel, to Chatzer, from Rebbi Ya'akov, and Terumah, from Rebbi Eliezer. What did ...

  1. ... Hillel say with regard to someone who put out fruit to dry and Shabbos arrived?
  2. ... Rebbi Ya'akov say with regard to someone who put out fruit to dry in his courtyard?
  3. ... Rebbi Eliezer say with regard to someone who separated Terumah before the G'mar Melachah (the final stage that causes them to become subject to Ma'asros)?

6)

(a) Ravin Amar Rebbi Yochanan's statement with regard to Mekach conforms with the Beraisa of 'ha'Lokei'ach Te'einim me'Am ha'Aretz' ...
What does the Beraisa go on to say?

(b) Under what condition is Ravin Amar Rebbi Yochanan lenient in this case as well as all the other cases?

(c) Besides the current Chidush (that Mekach does not fix fruit for Ma'asros before it reaches the stage of G'mar Melachah), which other two Chidushim does this Beraisa teach us?

(d) How can we derive from this Beraisa that most Amei ha'Aretz separate Ma'asros?

7)
(a) Ravin Amar Rebbi Yochanan's statement with regard to Mekach comes to preclude from the Mishnah in Ma'asros.
What does the Mishnah say about someone who exchanges fruit with his friend? Does the Tana Kama make any distinction between whether one intends to *eat* the fruit or to put it out to *dry*?

(b) What does Rebbi Yehudah hold?

(c) What is the basis of the Machlokes between the Tana Kama and Rebbi Yehudah?

8)

(a) 'Mashilin Peiros Derech Arubah'.
What are Chazal permitting here? Why does the owner want to lower the fruit anyway?

(b) Does this concession extend to Shabbos, too, or is it restricted to Yom- Tov?

(c) How is the concession restricted even on Yom-Tov?

9)
(a) What else may one do if rain threatens to spoil one's fruit, jars of wine or of oil?

(b) Seeing as none of these things constitute excessive bother, why do they require a special dispensation in order to be permitted?

(c) What is one permitted to do if water is dripping into one's house?

10)
(a) What does one opinion prove from the Pasuk in Ki Savo "Ki Yishal Zeisecha", and another from the Mishnah in Bechoros '*ha'Shechol* ve'ha'Kesul'? What is 'ha'Shechol'?

(b) How does ...

  1. ... a third opinion learn from a Mishnah in Nazir that 'Masirin' would be appropriate?
  2. ... a fourth, from the Mishnah in Keilim 'ha'Shechor ve'ha'Zug shel Saparim ... Temei'im', that 'Mashchirin' is appropriate? What is a Shechor?
  3. ... a fifth, from the Mishnah in Shabbos 'Mi she'*Nashru* Keilav ba'Mayim' that 'Manshirin' is appropriate?
(c) How might we also learn this latter Lashon from the Mishnah in Pei'ah - 'Eizehu Leket ... '?
11)
(a) For which two reasons does the Mishnah in Shabbos permit clearing away four or five boxes of straw to make room to sit?

(b) The Gemara tries to compare our Mishnah to the Mishnah in Shabbos, to permit lowering four or five boxes down a skylight on Yom-Tov. We decline to apply the leniency from the Mishnah in Shabbos to our Mishnah for one of two reasons, one of them because the reason of Bitul Beis Hamedrash does not apply here.
What is the other one?

(c) Why, on the other hand, do we suggest that perhaps in our case, even more than four or five boxes will be permitted?
