To put a pipe in a barrel to draw liquid is permitted, but folding a leaf is prohibited as it looks like you are making a utensil.

Being permitted to make a hole in a utensil only if it was broken and put back together is true for the holding part of the utensil. However, making a hole in the cover even if it was never broken, since the hole is on top which is not the norm as dirt could come in, it is permitted.

A rope used to latch a box closed, since it is meant to be constantly opened it can be ripped open. A box with a metal or wood lock, if you lose the key, cannot be cracked open.
