August 9

Beitzah 1:8

Borer, the melacha of separating, is permitted for the purpose of eating on Yom Tov. However, rabbinically certain actions of borer are not permitted.

Bais Shammai says that similar to Shabbos, you must separate [borer] only the good from the bad to eat right away. Bais Hillel says you can borer to put in a plate or basket [which is not for right away] but you cannot do it with a fine or coarse sieve. R’ Gamlial says you can soak the pulse and take off the chaff.

Beitzah 1:9

Bais Shammai says you cannot send presents to your friends on Yom Tov unless they are foods ready to eat. Bais Hillel says you can even send to your friend live animals. You can send wine, oil, fine flour, but not grains as they are usually ground which is prohibitted on Shabbos. R’ Shimon holds even grains are permitted.
