The cohein gadol then went to read the parsha of Yom Kippur. If he wanted to wear his linen bigdei kehuna [clothes of a regular cohein] he could otherwise he could wear his own white clothes.

The gabbai of the shul in the Bais Hamikdash took the Sefer Torah and gave it to the head of the shul, who gave it to the second in command, who gave it to the cohein gadol to read the parsha.

He reads from Vayikra 16:1 until 16:34 and 23:26 until 23:32. Then he rolls up the Sefer Torah and puts it under his arm and says, ‘More than what I read is written here. It is also written in Bamidbar 29:7 until 29:11.’

He said 8 berachos:

1. The end bracha made on a Sefer Torah when you finish reading in public.
2. ‘ Ritzei biamcha yisrael vsirtzeh haavoda bidvir beisecha ….. [as in shemone esrei]. Baruch atta Hashem sheosicha livadcha biyira naavode’. [Accept your nation and their service in your holy house… Blessed are you Hashem, for it is you alone we serve with awe].
3. The bracha of ‘Modim’ in shimoneh esrei.
4. The bracha of ‘Michol lavoseinu’ [said in our davening on Yom Kippur]
5. The bracha that the bais hamikdash should stand.
6. The bracha of ‘Baruch atta Hashem habocher biyisrael’ [that chose yisrael].
7. The bracha of ‘Baruch atta Hashem habocher bizaro shel Aharon’ [that chose the cohanim].
8. The bracha of ‘Baruch atta Hashem shomeya tefila’ [who listens to our prayers].

The burning of the he-goat and ox, which was done outside, was done at the exact time the cohein gadol was reading from the Torah.
