Shikalim 3:2
When they took out the money from the treasury chamber they took it out in 3
baskets of 3 saah each. On them was written alef beis gimmel indicating which
was taken first and therefore which basket should be used first. R’ Yishmael
says the numbers were written in Greek.
Since they needed to be careful that no Jew should suspect them of stealing,
the cohanim who went into the treasury would not wear clothes with a hem. They
would go barefoot with no tefillin or amulets.
Shikalim 3:3
R’ Gamlial and his family, who did not want his coins left in the treasury
but rather wanted them to be used for the korban tamid, would walk into the
treasury when they were taking out the money. He would be holding the coin in
his fingers and throw it in the pile directly before the gatherer and the
gatherer would drop the coin into the baskets.
The gatherer would ask the officers, ‘Should I gather now?’, and they
would answer 3 times, ‘Gather, gather, gather.’
