Taanis 2:6
[ The cohanim were divided into 24 mishmaros which did the avoda for a whole
week. Each mishmar was divided into seven groups. Each group was a called a bais
av that did avoda for a specific day.]
By the first three fasts, the cohanim of the mishmar would not fast the whole
day and the cohanim of the bais av would not fast at all.
The middle three fasts the cohanim of the mishmar would fast the whole day
and the cohanim of the bais av would fast but not all day.
The last 7 fasts they would all fast the whole day, all this is the words of
R’ Yehoshua.
The chachamim say by the first three fasts the cohanim of the mishmar and
bais av did not fast at all. The middle three fasts the cohanim of the mishmar
fasted but not all day and the bais av would not fast at all. The last 7 fasts
the cohanim of the mishmar would fast the whole day and the cohanim of the bais
av would fast but not all day.
Taanis 2:7
The cohanim of the mishmar are allowed to drink wine at night but not during
the day, the cohanim of the bais av cannot drink even by day.
[Maamad are Bnei Yisrael ---the Torah says that for the public korbanos there
must be people ‘standing by’ the karban. To accomplish this chazal set aside
people who didn’t go to work who are considered standing by the korban.]
The cohanim of the mishmar and the people of the maamad cannot take a
haircut, or wash their clothes during their service. This was to make sure when
they would take a haircut and have clean clothes before they started. However on
Thursday, all is permitted out of respect for Shabbos.
