Taanis 4:3

The people of the maamad would fast from Monday until Thursday. They didn’t fast on Friday so as not to enter Shabbos hungry which is not respectful. They didn’t fast on Sunday so as not to go directly from rest to hunger which is not healthy.

They had a special reading of the Torah and would say on:

Sunday Beraishis 1:1-8

Monday Beraishis 1:6-13

Tuesday Beraishis 1:9-19

Wednesday Beraishis 1:14-22

Thursday Beraishis 1:20-31

Friday Beraishis 1:24-31 2:1-3

The big parshas which are at least 5 pesukim were divided between two people to be read and the small one is read by one.

They read the Torah after Schacharis and after Mussaf on days that there was Mussaf. By mincha they didn’t read the pesukim from the Torah but just said them by heart, just like we say shema. Erev Shabbos by mincha it was not done.

Taanis 4:4

The people from the maamad who were in Yerushalayim did work in the bais hamikdash.

All days that there was Hallel there was no maamad in Schacharis. When there was Mussaf there was no maamad in Neilah. R’ Akiva says whenever there was a korban of wood, there was no maamad by Mincha. Ben Azai said this is what R’ Yehoshua said if there was Mussaf there was no maamad in mincha and if there was a korban of wood there was no maamad by Neilah. R’ Akiva then agreed with Ben Azai.
