Hashem said to Bilam, ’Do not go with them, do not curse the nation, because they are blessed’. Rashi explains that Bilam asked Hashem, ‘if I can’t curse them, can I bless them?’ Hashem answered no. Why does Bilam want to bless them right after he wanted to curse them?
The Ksav Sofer explains that Bilam’s single objective was to enhance his own image, ‘either I will curse them and they will be destroyed or I will bless them and all that they acquire will be because of me.' In either case Bilam wanted to take all the credit.
