Parshas Matos/Masei

The posuk says [35:2] that Hashem commanded Bnei Yisrael to donate cities to the tribe of Levi. It is understandable that Hashem did not want the Leviim to own land so they would concentrate their energies on more spiritual pursuits then planting food. However, everyone must have a house to live in, so why couldn’t they get a portion for houses from Hashem and not have to get it from their brothers?

The Aznayim Latorah explains that Hashem wanted Bnei Yisrael to know that if a person is doing a mitzvah, you must totally take care of them. The end of the posuk says ‘and give them migrash’, which is the nicer area such as a park. The Torah repeats the word ‘give’ again to teach us that when you take care of people who are doing mitzvahs you should give them more then the bare essentials (even a park).
