Parshas Vayeitzei

When Rachel gave birth to Yosef she said, ‘Ausaf Hashem es cherpasi [my disgrace]’. What does Ausaf mean?

Ramban---says it is the simple translation of ‘gathering’, meaning collecting together objects that are spread out. In this case it means Rachel’s disgrace about not having children, which was spread out among the many people who knew her, will be gathered in and no one will disgrace her again.

Rabbainu Bachaye ----says it has two meanings one literal and one non-literal. The literal meaning is ‘to add’, which in this case was a request to be added one more child. She knew that only one more son would be born to Yaakov so she asked for that son to be from her. The non-literal translation is from the root word ‘gathering’, that two tribal qualities were gathered together in Yosef. Therefore, Yosef had two sons which took his place since he had passed his dual qualities on, one to each son.
